A 2C is needed, also a number 1 goalie. So Dach and Montembeault cannot be part of the future core. Also McDavid made me chuckle.

Well if they signed McDavid (of course they won’t), Suzuki would be the 2C. I’m also hoping one of Fowler or Dobes can be that # 1 goalie.

But I do agree with you, going forward they should prioritize a 2C and another right shot defenceman. They have the cap space for it.

I would certainly trade him. Add a high pick and another prospect and you could fetch something interesting. Enough of those losers that think this is a country club.

Yeah. What’s positive about Dach is his salary. He is not a risk at this point. And a team can still think there is untapped potential. Don’t think his value is good but most certainly tradeable. Maybe we can recoup a 2nd round pick or equivalent prospect for him.

Saw something this morning that said Wash offered a 2nd rd pick for Evans. If they decide to trade him near the deadline the offers better increase in value or may as well keep him and try to resign him.

Like the panic offseason that Gainey had as GM signing a bunch of UFAs and trading for Gomez.

up until that peculiar early week in July - BG had been a great GM, but man he went and busted the bank on 3 small mercenaries:
- Gomez, well not that small - but slow as molasses.
- Cammy, nice have as a complimentary piece, but good grief - soooo small.
- if Cammy was small, then Gionta took the cake. good grief that was brutal.

While I fully expect Edmonton will extend McDavid this post is more to show that Montreal is in good shape cap wise going forward and can add an elite player.

I would love to get McDavid, but for that price, I would prefer to get Ratanen at 14m$; He's a very good, big physical player, and it would give an extra 6m $ for another player. I believe that a team with a lot of depth will be better than a team that spend to much of his money on 3-4 players.

At best I think he’s a backup that season and gone the next season as he’s a UFA then. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see a Fowler-Dobes in goal that season (or a better veteran goalie than Montembeault).

It's time to get realistic, Dach was a project and it won't pan out as expected. Not a bad player per say, but soft and not enough fire in him.

We should do everything we can to package our 2 first rounders in this year's draft to move up for Caleb Desnoyers. He's the missing piece IMO. Hockey IQ and vision are off the chart...+ good compete level, good skills, good skating.

Though I see him more as a winger, Michael Hage could fill the 2C spot in 2 or 3 years.

Kapanen could become a solid third line center. And Beck should compete for the 4C position.


Bottom line, we need to find someone to fill that spot (2C) for the next 2-3 years.

Only option I see = A gamble on Dylan Cozens.

He can be a development coach, if he wants. He is the worst D in the team and his partner needs to heqvily compensate for his lack of mobility. On the ice, we need players who can perform.

When Gainey came in he had a belief that short term contracts were best for both team and player since the contract would reflect the players more current play on ice. Unfortunately his philosophy didn't work at a time when players had leverage to simply leave.

He also had a belief not to negotiate a contract during the season as it was too distracting for a player. He felt that if the team wanted the player and the player wanted to stay, a contract would be worked out while the team had " exclusive negotiating rights to the players."

He gave up too many draft picks to constantly plug holes with short term fixes.

Gomez fiasco.

On the positive he brought dignity back to the team, did make some good moves and was competent enough to drag us from oblivion.

Gainey was a middling GM, regardless of his tragedy. Very good guy though.

There is no dignity in being a middling team that plays boring hockey and feeds young players to real teams. Is that how low the habs have become in the eyes of the fans? All you want is to barely make the playoffs at best for a decade? What a shameful franchise that was under the incompetent hand of a terrible GM but a really nice guy

It was a post to show that Montreal could fit McDavid’s salary under the cap. Realistically that’s not going to happen, but it also shows Montreal could add a 2C and a top 4 defenceman without having cap problems.

The Dach and Struble salaries were just guesses, they could both get less. Although the average salary when Dach hits free agency is $4.73 million (22 players with a $104 million cap).

Doubt he'd consider MTL but i would definitely consider offering Rantanen 14M imo. Could let Laine walk in a year and/or move him clearing up $6-7M off the books (plus Gallagher/Anderson in the future) they're in a good position to absorb a big cap #. Just don't want them to overpay for a mid tier option would rather overpay at the top end and bring in a superstar. Not often those guys are available
