I’ve never understood this line of thinking with vets on expiring contracts, especially Savard.

He won’t be back next year

What’s an extra 3 months of “mentorship” gonna do for the young ones? He’s on his last legs and what exctjy is he gonna teach them?

You take anything you can get for all of Armia, Savard Anderson, Gallagher and Evans and run.

Take what you can get is an even worse line of thinking. It's how you get less value.

KH may just sit and use the 2 #1 picks and not trade
We were never all that likely to trade them at/before the deadline, but trading them at the draft is still a very strong possibility. In fact Hughes has traded a 1st round pick of that years draft at every single draft so far.

How high up in the draft could we get if we combined both our firsts....pending placement of course, but say as of today.

Most development is a question of confidence, and Savard is a guy who provides our young D with confidence. An extra 3 months of mentorship means better development during those 3 months, it also means the young guys going into the offseason with a better mindset which means a better offseason of development and means we are less likely to stumble out of the gate next season.

I think you are very mistaken on the return for the above 3 players. And those three are exactly the type of player that often are over paid for
Many hm become fools come trade deadline .
I doubt that you get more than a 3rd round pick for Savard and a 4th or 5th round pick for Dvorak.

In fact, there may not even be a market for Dvorak and we might end up riding his contract to its natural end before letting him go for absolutely nothing.

I could, however, see someone trading a late 2nd round pick for Armia because of his all-around forechecking, puck-possession and defensive skills for the playoffs.

Also, by very mistaken, I hope you aren't suggesting that any of these players a worth a first round pick? If so, I think that YOU are very mistaken!

I agree that Savard has more value to our team's mindset, especially with Guhle out for the rest of the season, than a 3rd round pick might have down the line. Since I think that this is all we would get for the services of Savard, who is years older than when TB gave a late 1st round pick to get him, I can see a solid argument for keeping Savard as our own rental and letting him go at the end of his contract for nothing in return.

As I mentioned before, we might be forced to do the same with Dvorak, though, as I'm not certain anybody will want to take him onto their roster?

If Armia nets us a 2nd round pick that can be used in a package of picks to net an NHL-ready youngster that upgrades our D on the right side, I say, "Go for it!"

Not as high as you might hope as it requires a team to look at the prospects available and comes away unimpressed but for another team to actually really really like at least one of those same prospects. So it only happens when there's not a lot of consensus on the top prospects.

So two-three spots possibly

The cap sets the salary scale. If the cap doubles, salaries double.
To be fair the increased cap doesn't increase all salaries equally. The star players will get the bulk of any cap increases, with the lower tier players getting a smaller percentage. From what I can recall the NHL min salary is set in the CBA and not tied directly to any cap increases, so this puts downwards pressure on the lower tier players.

But to your overall point yes it's fans being willing to pay all those big bucks and owners raising ticket prices that means players are getting paid such huge amounts. Which is one of those complaints (Players make too much) I've never understood, if I buy I ticket to a concert, I'd expect everyone would want most of that money to go towards the artists, but for some reason when it comes sports people don't want the money to go towards the artists. I guess it's some bastardization of cheering for the logo on the front and not the name on the back, but the money isn't going to the team, it's going into Molson's pocket and he's even less representative for the team then the players are.

Canucks biggest issues were the EP/Miller rift and that Soucy is playing too much. They fixed both, got a middle 6 center, got younger and created some cap space. They are a better balanced team now, should result in more wins...and they will have $10m at the deadline to fix any other holes.
JT Miller's numbers are elite. Chytil's are mediocre at best.

I didn't realize that the minimum salary wasn't adjusted. Thank you for pointing that out.

To your second point, I think it's a combination of factors. The first is that the owner's real profits aren't public knowledge, most people don't realize that owning the Habs for example is a license to print money. We're also indoctrinated as a society to worship billionaires.

Players, on the other hand, though rich, don't make money from money, they make money from labor, which people respect as much.
