easy pass then, trading for EP only makes sense if it's at a discount, high AAV and he has injury risk with his knee tooThe first player they would ask for in a transaction for Petersson would be Suzuki.

KH wont trade his captainPetterssons highs might be higher, but Suzuki is reliable, never injured, a fantastic leader creating a locker room atmosphere players coming in remark immediately. He's a culture setter and never pouts. Gervais had great words in his book for Suzuki. A Pettersson trade makes sense for other assets (Caufield, Dach, Beck, Hage, Mailloux). I don't think Vancouver would be interested though.

Would you do this if both the Canucks and Islanders say yes? 6 pieces coming from the Habs (Dach, Newhook, Matheson, two 1st's, and Kapanen).
Habs acquire:
* Pettersson
Canucks acquire:
* Barzal
* Matheson
* O Kapanen
* Islanders 2nd round pick
Islanders acquire:
* Dach
* Newhook
* Habs 1st (likely 10-15 range)
* Flames/Panthers 1st (likely 10-20 range)
Does this look like a Lou Lamoriello trade to you ?
agreed, especially when that captain personality is perfect to be a montreal captain, is liked by all and signed to a good long contract.KH wont trade his captain
it seems like i'm higher on EP than you but i wouldn't pay anything close to that, i'd do Dach + Matheson + Florida/CGY 1st at the very most, if that's too low so be itWould you do this if both the Canucks and Islanders say yes? 6 pieces coming from the Habs (Dach, Newhook, Matheson, two 1st's, and Kapanen).

i don't care what other teams offer, you have to look at the player and the risks and what makes sense to move from your roster/assetsIt's the type of offer that is going to the max point to generate momentum. What do you do if the Canucks call you back and say the Islanders want to give us Barzal... Can you up your offer?
I say Yes. I ask for another pick coming back tho. Like Van 2nd or Isles 3rd or something. What can I say, I’m addicted to magic beans.

EP doesn't play up to his AAV and he has big knee injury risks, that's a lowball candidate, if it doesn't work so be it

i like Kapanen, i think Newhook is underrated and has more upside and our 1st is another high end prospectAlmost nothing of value would be loss. Pettersson is major upgrade on Dach, Demidov takes Newhook spot next year (another major upgrade), Matheson will be 32 and UFA in a year and a half. We have Hutson/Guhle/Xhekaj/Struble and Engstrom might be ready next or 2. Kapanen whatever we already have Evans/Beck/Hage for centers in the bottom 6.
The odds of either of those 2 picks ending up anywhere near the player that Pettersson is are almost 0. Team is trying to make the next step up now and IF those picks hit, they won’t be ready to contribute for a couple of years. Caufield-Suzuki won’t be cheap for ever.
Caufield-Suzuki-Slaf
Laine-Pettersson-Demidov
I’m in.

I tell him yeah go ahead and take Barzal 1for1 then, we both knows he’s a winger. Dudes a defensive liability at C and his best years have been at wing which is why the Isles have been playing him there. Take it or leave, we have time on our side, meanwhile Hughes is UFA in 2 years and the whole world knows he’ll bounce if you gives are not competing by then.
After thinking about Lou, I don't think the Islanders want a rebuild. I'd try to keep them out of it but I do see Lou offering Barzal and a 2nd (something like that). If we really want Pettersson, we need to be prepared and futures is something we can afford. Especially for someone like Pettersson.
* Habs 1st is likely 8-15 range. That's a serious pick. Got to give to get in this case.
* Flames/Panthers 1st is likely 10-20 range. Not as good as the Habs pick but not far off.
* Dach, Newhook, Matheson are NHL pieces we can live without while we have depth coming to replace them anyways. If Dach breaks out with the Canucks, so be it. As long as Pettersson is the guy we think he can be for us, that's all the matters.

One of the reasons to build a strong pool and futures is to be able to use them in trades. I would have no problem giving up both 1st rounders and 3 NHL pieces we can live without for EP. Habs have depth coming so yes, we can live without Dach, Newhook, and Matheson like we did with Romanov, Lehkonen, Monahan.
The main goal here should be to reinforce the core between Suzuki and Demidov (7 year gap). The future picks we have are great to have but do they really help with our potential contending core? If we are not careful, we will be rebuilding for longer than Suzuki's contract.
Imagine, we are able to get EP without using Suzuki, Caufield, Slaf, Hutson, Demidov, Hage, Reinbacher, Mailloux, Kapanen, Beck, Roy and we say no? Come on man
If Islanders know what’s best for them they’ll rebuild. That package you offered for Barzal is an overpayment (one that we can afford if it lands us Petey) that they should probably take. They have a lot pieces that could get them some nice assets and the next 2 drafts after this one are supposed to be sick. Perfect time to bottom out, maybe keep Dobson and build from there.

Got to overpay on HF boards to create any real conversation starters though. Fair?
