If I’m Hughes, I’m not changing much in the regular season.

I’d still move Savard at the deadline, with a handshake deal in place that he’d be re-signed in the offseason on a cheap deal (1.75 max).

Re-sign Evans. He’s more than earned his contract and spot here on the third line.

Armia I’m still iffy on, I’d re-sign him for two years on a cheap deal (similar to Savard), otherwise I’d send him happily to the UFA ranks. He and Evans work extremely well together, and if he signs to a team friendly deal than he’s welcome. I’m more inclined to move him though, unless it’s a real sweetheart deal.

The Draft and the UFA market will be the time to make a splash -

Since the Habs have turned things around and are playing .500 hockey now, our draft pick position will likely suffer. I think we still need a center prospect, it would be nice to grab a prospect like Desnoyers or McQueen. Then I’d try to grab Tretheway on defense. Two very talented young players in valuable positions of need.

At the draft I’d trade Matheson, Struble, a prospect (choice of Kidney, Harvey-Pinard or Farrell) and Montreal’s 2nd and 3rd round picks (acquired from Pittsburgh and New Jersey) for Colton Parayko of the St Louis Blues.

Blues get some much needed picks, a veteran puck moving defenseman and a solid cheap young defender. Habs get a top pairing guy to play big minutes beside Lane Hutson.

Then I’d sign Sam Bennett (another Quartexxx client). The perfect second line center for this group. Adds much needed snarl and muscle to the top 6 and a left handed shot center.

Lineup next year:

Caufield - Suzuki - Slafkovsky
Laine - Bennett - Demidov
Heineman - Evans - Dach
Anderson - Beck - Gallagher

Hutson - Parayko
Guhle - Carrier
Xhekaj - Savard

Montembeault
Dobes
Fowler

There’s a team that’s built to compete NOW, and do some damage in the playoffs, while you have young guys like Hage, Desnoyers/McQueen, Roy, Tretheway, Reinbacher and Mailloux in the pipeline ready to take their spots (eventually)in the lineup.

Can Parayko skate? Watched a guy skate by him like and he looked like a slower Savard.

Canucks are in win now mode. I don't think we could make offers for either Petterson or Miller. We just don't have the pieces to do it.

I wouldn't be counting on UFA
That never seems to work out they resign or get traded and then get signed

That it
Don't need a EP centre type
Need a solid centre, wins faceoffs and hard to play against

I mean that describes Miller to a T. His contract is far more favorable than Pettersson's. He's a smart player & I don't think he falls off as much people think he will as he ages.

The issue is he has an NMC & if rumors are correct is an asshole.

I like Pettersson, but I don’t like his contract. He had an awful playoffs last year, but had a tremendous one in 2020. For about a year, he's been suffering with knee tendonitis, so he may also be damaged goods if it's chronic.

Don't even need rumors to see that Miller is an asshole, you can plainly see it in any media interview he's ever done. He is good though.

Pettersson comes with a ton of red flags (just as much/more than Laine) and a huge contract. If you had a crystal ball saying he'd put it together, then maybe but you don't. Plus they'd probably want Demidov or something in return (and hell no to that).

We three and runner?
Thoughts
I share your thoughts on UFAs, we’re not a destination market and HuGo will have a steep uphill climb.

However, we are a destination management contingent and a welcoming teammate environment, which, when you listen to incoming players like Carrier and others, is not found everywhere. By destination management I mean how Hughes shows care toward players and tries to accommodate their wishes whenever they are moved. Maybe that scores a few points with those UFAs on the fence.

As for EP, I’m afraid he’d cost player(s) we’d hate to give up and the negative comments about him makes me wary of his contract. Might depend on how much Hughes can squeeze out of any negotiations with his counterpart.

If we were going to make a big trade, I’d prefer Dobson to Peterson. He and Carrière would give us real depth and then a guy like RB could be eased in.

It would also make Mailloux expendable so he’d go the other way. Matheson would be traded as well. Then there are picks and prospects we could give up.

The issue is that I believe Dobson’s contract is up. He’s going to want big coin.

Great skater - smooth stride and good acceleration, especially for a man of his size. Not sure the context of what you saw, but I can tell you, he and Savard aren’t in the same area code as far as skating goes.

This clip should give you an idea of his skating ability:

Or here, to draw the penalty shot:

What do you think the trade talk would look like? Pretty sure they would target a center in return because their pool is thin at center and looks much worse without EP. Won't be all of these pieces but this is probably our approach

* Dach and/or Newhook
* Kapanen or Beck
* Flames/Panthers 1st

My problem with Pettersson is he is not the gritty type that turns the needle in the playoffs. However, he is one hell of a talented forward and not something we should automatically say no to.

Canucks are not desperate to trade him so this is going to linger on IMO.

We have the pieces to do it but the real question is the pieces we want to offer might not be good enough.

This might get it done and remember, EP has a very large contract with lots of signing bonus structure. Full NMC kicks in July 1st. This might be PK Subban round 2

Draft day trade:
* Dach (NHL body that the Canucks will want at center)
* Habs 1st (after lottery)
* Flames/Panthers 1st

Canucks save salary cap to go after someone this summer. How much do they like/dislike Dach? No idea but two 1st rounders on top is a pretty good dangle IMO.
