Bingo. People love to trade for big names and then complain about their anchor contracts later.
When is the last time the Habs acquired a big name with a big cap hit in the first place?

8 or so years ago, Weber? Tons of complaints about his ultra long contract.

Like 15 years ago, Gomez? Nobody was in love with that trade.

This summer? Patrick Laine? Lol
He had just two years left on his deal and we are in a rebuild and not constrained by the Cap, I don’t think he counts as the kind of “cal anchor” acquisition alluded to in the comment I quoted. I was big time into acquiring Laine too, so it’s not like I’m underrating him.

The main source of the Weber complaints was emotion because the guy he was traded for had a special connection with alot of the fanbase.

Gomez was also brought in to essentially replace another very popular player. But it also had another layer because of what they gave up. It was easy to hate this one. The contract became a hotter topic afterwards when gomez was not living up to it. The habs were lucky to take advantage of the buyout which came out of the 2nd lockout.

Gomez was not living up to expectations with the Rangers already. It was a dumb move by Gainey because they gave up a good prospect, the rest of the elements of that trade had very little to short success in the league. Anyhow, nobody expected McDo to develop back then. It was a miracle that he even did. A kinda of John LeClair type affair. It was also the summer where Gainey completely lost it and brought in many UFAs to replace the departing core.

I would sign Evans at 3.2 mil x 4 years.

I would trade Matheson + picks (CGY first/MTL first 2026) and prospect (Roy/Struble/Beck) for a RHD prospect NHL ready.

Armia + 4th 2025 traded at the deadline for a late 2nd.

Dvorak i would keep and sign him around 3mil (he loves it in MTL).

Evans and Dvorak as 3rd and 4th center is great.

CC-Suzuki-Demidov
Slaf-Dach-Laine
Newhook-Evans-Heinemen
Anderson-Dvorak-Gally
Kapanen,

Hutson-RHD trade
Guhle-Reinbacher
Wifi-Savard
Mailloux-Carrier

If Evans keeps playing like he has right up until the deadline then I dont think a 1st rd pick is out of the question.
They should be trying to sign him. The guy is valuable as a bottom six center. Shit the only center they have after Nick.

That lineup is a guaranteed top 5 lottery pick.

All we need to be a playoff team next season is a 2C and a 2/3RD. Easier said than done but we have the assets and cap space.

Re-sign Evans and trade Savard
Sign Olivier and a figure out a backup goalie

Use Matheson, Dach, Newhook, prospects, picks, whatever to get it done.

Slafkovsky-Suzuki-Caufield
Demidov-2C-Laine
Heineman-Evans-Anderson
Olivier-Beck-Gallagher

Hutson-2RD
Guhle-Reinbacher/Mailloux
Xhekaj-Carrier

Montembeault

Basically need to do Matheson + for a RHD and Dach + for a 2c, and we're in good shape for a while

I don't think keeping Dvorak is worth blocking Kapanen/Beck from a C spot.

that is the issue.
sign him or trade him
what has more value??? time will tell
I think his value is to keep him. He does a lot of thing well. The real question is does he want to stay.

If he goes to UFA he will get term & $$$ and will have multiple offers. There are so many better places to play than MTL both of hockey and lifestyle wise.

I agree , the other side of me wonders what a GM would give up for him?

That D core isn’t playoff caliber.

Well, they should know by now if Jake intends on going to UFA. If that’s the intent they have no choice but to trade him.
Evans is very underrated by many on these boards.

Depends a lot on who said 2RD is and if Reinbacher/Mailloux progress by next year.
They are better off acquiring a legit 2RD, keeping Math (playing him in second pair), and adding another vet D as depth. Let the other two develop. That to me is a legit D core.

So this scenario you proposed doesn’t really happen basically ever

Dvorak? guy is a non factor on most nights. Trade him for a pick and don't block guys like Beck.

Too early to trade these vets (or too late, should had been last Summer)… Leave the kids in Laval. They need too gain pro experience, all of them. If Habs are doomed to lose once gain, let's do it with the actual guys.

I dont think he is underrated but if he wants 5 million a year. habs may pass him off
I think Evans is looking for a longer term. Maybe 5 years at 3,5 per season ???
