Good for Evans. He will get what he deserves and it might be his only biggish contract of his career. That being said, as far as the Habs are concerned, his salary would not be a problem if the term is max 4 years. Don’t know he would settle for that though.
Yeah his agent will find some good references for a good pay day.
I looked at Blake Coleman as a good example. Relatively the same production but Coleman had better underlying numbers with better teams.
He got 4.9m for 6 years and I think he was 29 when he signed the deal. This signed after Tampa picked him up for their cup runs.

Chicago gets two young players that need a change. Add in a mid round pick. Mrazek is a vet that helps to insulate our young goalies in case they falter. Allen's role. You want Dobes thrown to the wolves? Bad plan. Hughes is a backup in the AHL. You want to entrust him to be an NHL backup with no insurance? Another bad plan.

I don't think Primeau interest Chicago and they already have a bunch of winger prospects so Farrell would just be buried again.

We are not competing this year, we do not need a contender backup.

Either try both Dobes and Hughes in turn to see what you have or get a rental backup like Georgiev.

Dobes needs to play, and the AHL is where that will happen. Hughes is fine, but we risk missing out on a real solution. G have been traded already, and the options are slim. We can't keep playing Monty every game. I also understand you dont think chicago has interest. Keep repeating it. The fact is, we need a proper 2G. We didnt bring in a vet D for nothing. Management wants to see progress and wants to support the kids.

I wouldnt go 4 m. My ceiling would be 3.5. He will want more in FA. Sucks because I really like him.
Even 3.5 is a lot it would need to be max 3 years and i don't see him signing for 3 years at his age. He'll go for it. If he does 45 points his ask will for sure be 4 years minimum and he'll want to get close to 4 millions with the cap raising. Hockey is sadly a business and KH will have to evaluate the risks this new contract pose while we are still stuck with Anderson and Gallagher for 2 more years and also evaluate the reward if Evans keep the pace his value at the TDL could be close to Weise/Margarine (Margarine was a PTO his value was not big in this trade).

Just to put things into perspective Vencouver spend 4.9 millions total on Suter, Sherwood and Blueger and they cumulatively have 27 goals and 52 points. We are spending more money on Anderson alone. I like Evans but he's not a 2nd line center and in the cap era you can't spend too much on your depth. I think it would be advisable to let Evans go and reap the reward and then try to find a vet 2nd line center next summer on a short deal (2 years max) as a bridge until Hage might be ready and use Beck as the 3rd line center next season.

Caufield - Suzuki - Slaf
Laine - vet on a short deal - Demidov
Heineman - Beck - Gallagher
Anderson - Kapanen - Mathieu Olivier?

And TB was bright enough to simply let him go ....

And once again, I said we could bring a rental backup. Mrazek is not that.

How is two years perfect? Anything more than 1 year means you basically give up on Dobes and have to let go of Hughes.
How is it giving up on Dobes!? Do you understand development? Dobes gets to play a full season in the AHL this year and wont have the pressure to be an NHL backup next year if he isnt ready. You understand he's 23, right?? He's only played 1 AHL season. Do you not understand having contingency plans??

I understand he's 23, you're the one who seem to not. This is his 2nd AHL season. When do you plan on trying him as backup?

Also, you run Dobes/Fowler next year in the AHL so neither get a starter load? This also means Hughes goes away.

I already talked about contingency plans, but you ignored them.

For this year, test Hughes/Dobes as backup and get a cheap backup goalie if they aren't ready.

Next year, Dobes and Hughes fight for the backup spot to Monty. The loser backup Fowler (and Miller in the ECHL). If Dobes loses, he's likely done as a Hab unless Hughes falter during the year.

Primeau spent 4 seasons in the AHL with better numbers than Dobes and failed. Now we are in a bind because we put all our eggs in that basket without a plan B. It's foolish. I dont care about Hughes, and neither should you. He's a 28 y/o backup in the AHL. We need something better. Dobes and Fowler will get their icetime. Dobes can have SOME NHL games, but putting him at 2G right off the bat is irresponsible. If Dobes proves himself, there is nothing stopping us from trading Mrazek midway through next season or at the TDL, or did you forget we can trade players?

I don't think Savard has much trade value and we don't have much defensive depth as it is. I'd rather use the retention slot on Dvorak and give Beck the chance instead.

Savard will have value at the TDL. Don't worry, man.
Maybe if a team gets a key injury we could get a 2nd, but I think Dvorak/Armia would have more value and we actually have better depth to give other guys the chance.

With Savard, you have to hope that the other 6 dmen never get injured, and we pick up/trade for a #7 dman.

He's a vet RD with size. Easy 2nd and 4th at the TDL.

At Dobes' age, Primeau was already getting stints in the NHL. He was NHL backup at the age Dobes will be next year.

As for Fowler/Dobes, either only one of them get their icetime or neither of them do. There is only one starter load.

I don't think yoyo'ing Dobes next year is the way either. There is a point where you have to trust your goalie.

Primeau had 21 starts in the NHL from 19-20 to 22-23. He was not a backup. He was just getting a taste here and there. Dobes has played 65 AHL games. He is due for a few NHL games (Primeau got 6 NHL starts in his first two pro seasons, btw), but giving him the 2G role right now is not the right call. Having two good young goalies in the system at the same time doesnt mean we should rush one of them.

What does 19-20 to 22-23 have to do with what I said?

25-26 will be Dobes equivalent to Primeau's 23-24, in which Primeau was the backup.

Primeau started his pro career at 20, Dobes at 22. You can't give Dobes the same path as Primeau.

I wonder what the plan is for a backup in the offseason. Wouldn't be surprised if we signed Allen again to a 1 year deal since I don't think there are any other realistic signings. Hughes has a lot of work to do in the offseason. The biggest needs include a middle 6 center, top 4 dman, and a backup goalie. Frankly, I would add getting someone like Olivier too.

Armia/Dvorak/Allen/Petry/Savard all come off the books, and Anderson has made himself tradeable again at 50% retention. We have a bunch of assets and cap space that should be used to make these additions.

And Primeau failed. We have no plan B. We had to play Monty back to back.

Again, I have no issue giving Dobes a shot, but he cant just go from 1 AHL season to bonafide backup right away. He also can't be given the spot right away next year without insurance. I am sure Hughes learned his lesson.

You can keep arguing against having a vet backup for this season and next, but it is just silly. If anything, it protects Dobes. If Dobes is ready, great! Trade Mrazek. If he isnt, great! We have Mrazek, and Dobes can get some extra time in the A. It's a win/win and safe approach.

At this point, it feels like you are arguing for the sake of it.

I'm arguing for the scenario I think is best for the development of our goalie prospects.

Primeau had issues development cannot solve, Dobes doesn't have those issues. I think Dobes will be ready for the next step either later this season or next season.

You know Hughes, he won't get a sub-optimal deal just to get rid of Mrazek and we will be stuck with him until 2026 TDL even if Dobes is ready.

Montembault and Primeau is fine this year. Im ok with upgrading Primeau but only with expiring contract.

Next year I want to see Dobes play backup full time with Habs.

Did you miss Monty playing the back to back? Primeau is done here.

I would be cool with Allen, but we need a backup NOW.
