A big-ass player who doesn't forecheck would be more frustrating than a tiny doberman who scares everyone.

How about we go back in time, clone Steve Begin and bring him back in the line up? :D
so agree
It does not need to be a 6.5 foot guy. But it needs to be a forechecking machine with a knack of hitting and getting players to cough the puck up and working over the opposition.

Thats hilarious. Think we're going to have to agree to disagree on this one.

Overplayed, overrated, debatably the most "brain farter" in the league with zero accountability (MSL fault) for it despite his mistakes ending up in the back of our net more than nearly all the other teams mistakes combined. Its almost impressive.
MSL and Hughes................love love Matheson.
Brainfarts and all.....................he has been absolutely awful the last few games, the Bruins game was his to lose, and he did.......lol
I am not saying he does not have a huge upside, he can provide offence and skates like the wind, so we do have to put up with his D mistakes, but just limit the TOI to a few less minutes, geez.

He’s just overplayed. He’s fine or even good as a second pairing dman

The question is when will the Habs have someone (defender) to play the heavy minutes? It would have a multiplier effect on our game and performance and results.

This is why I want us to play a stingier system for the time being.

Matheson is a younger Petry, only on the left side instead of the right side. I'd argue that Mailloux will become comparable to a Petry, even a little less defensively at risk, IMO, but still subject to the occasional brain fart as well.

Matheson would work fine on a second pairing on the left side, but weldon't need a top-4 lefty with both Hutson and Guhle being different quality looks at the same position.

Matheson is better off as trade bait than as a 3rd pairing LHD. A harder hitting D like Xhekaj who can still skate would be a better, cheaper option to balance out the skills for the D-Corps.

Some team must need a second pairing, offensive-minded LHD. Montreal has the luxury of offering an already affordable 50+ D-man at only 2.375M for the rest of this season and all of the next one.

A team coughing up a first round pick and a prospect for Matheson should at least get a 1st round pick back at next year's trade deadline should they want to move the veteran as a pure rental rather than re-sign him at that point.

I don't see why Zegras fits with us

Next year unless injuries

Caufield Slaf Suzuki Laine and Demidov

Needing a center probably. Zegras ain't the player I'm looking for. Unless we completely fleece them in a trade.

I'd look to make a real trade for a center , or a RHD.

Id still be really interested with Necas. We should be all over him if he doesn't want to stay in Carolina

Habs need to ADD a better Dman.
I disagree - I think Struble might do it. Desharnais does not play everygame, scrathed quite a bit and Struble still can be sent to to minor. Desharnais also has a 2M cap hit for this year and next. If Barron can't crack the lineup and Mailloux is not ready, this gives us a better D.

Guhle-Matheson
Hutson - Savard
Xhekaj - Desharnais

I think this makes us better for this year and next.

Vincent Desharnais for either Barron or Struble
I'm not dealing struble. He's athletic AND has a good IQ. Rare combination that will look better the longer he plays. I like him as a bottom pairing guy for years to come. I think X has a higher ceiling but lower floor.

Barron can go, even though he could end up being good with the right development. Can't see him ever getting it together in montreal.

A couple pages earlier, someone said Dach isn't skating the same way he did and therefore is half a second off the play. I totally agree...

But why? Is it physical? Is it psychological? My opinion is that it's psychological; he's scared to push. The idea of getting injured again is anchored in his mind for sure. And maybe he says to himself that the next injury could end his career. Fear. Very insidious. Remember, he's had two serious and long recovery injuries.

I have a friend, a very good hockey player, who crashed into the board 2 years ago. Came half an inch to get paralysed. Recovered fully now. He's back on the ice but he doesn't charge anymore, he lost some of his edges on the play. He is scared. Not an easy thing to deal with...

IMO, Dach deserves a full season to get back to mental shape. Because he has skills, it is worth giving him the time to recover his confidence. Only time will tell. And if at the end of 24-25, he's still out of it, he'll be on the long CH list of fail at center. And life will go on with Demidov, Hage or another prospect.

Id give Dach the rest of the season at 2c to figure it out, but the biggest need now and long term is a steady RD...Barron had all sorts of opportunity but he simply cant defend...which leave us with only Savard as a RD, and he is better suited on the 3rd pair.. Struble is struggling on the right side, Matheson as well, Guhle is OK but ideally I would play him on the 1st pair as a LHD.

Even if Reinbacher comes back and take a spot, we still need 2 more RD long term. I am fine with Guhle-Hutson-Xhekaj as our 3 LHDs so that leaves us with Matheson as trade bait..Matheson + pick/prospect for a more steady, less offence RD, is that possible?
