I seriously doubt a healthy PL would have changed the outcome of most of those games.
The issues go far deeper than one deck chair. He isn't miraculously saving Kirby Dach no way no how.
We need a reliable 2C and a #1RD before we can do anything. This team isn't close to the .500 team I expected this season.
yup
PL will add but not save
there is so many holes to fill on this team

If Drury & Gorton can get over their disdain for each other, could be a decent fit...

Trouba, though limited, brings a much needed RD physicality. Montreal is pretty close to NY all things considered, might alleviate a bit of the wife/residency concerns considering it would only be 1 1/2 seasons minus summer (& likely no playoffs this year).

Kreider, though I'm not so sure they'd actually move him, also adds a nice element of vet top 6 size/scoring that would compliment our young core nicely

We've got cap room, expiring vets & futures to make a compelling offer

To NYR
Pitt 2nd, Barron, Dvorak, Armia

To Mtl
Kreider, Trouba

NY downgrades at RD & W, but adds C depth, draft capital and ~13M in cap space this summer (5M$ pro rated cap room this year to help with deadline acquisition flexibility)

Habs add two vets with some mileage left at net 5M$ cap increase next season (on top of Dvo/Armia 8M$ that otherwise would expire).
Trouba reinforces RD buying more time for RB to settle in. Kreider slots in well anywhere in top 9 this year and next

Slaf Suzuki CC
Kreider Dach Laine
Anderson Evans Gally
Roy Newhook Heineman
Condotta, Pez

Guhle Matheson
Hutson Trouba
Xhekaj Savard
Strubble

How bout’ that Martin Necas huh?

Who could have predicted that?…
Necas is bad. Anyway according to this board last year.

Necas should be a cautionary tale to not judge a young player too fast, After a 70 points season in 2022-2023 he had a down year last yeat with 53 points -9. Most posters on this board last year called him a flop.

What have we leaned about drafting for need? Apparently not much...

Schaefer is a real one and would be the best defensive prospect in the Habs org. We'd be lucky to get him.
If Schaefer’s the clear BPA, they ought to take him. They can then more easily move other D for a top 6 forward.

We need to do a big trade with Vegas. Pietrangello and Stone. Aweye osti. Let's make it happen.

Edit: Dach, Guhle + Cal/Flor pick for Pietrangelo/Stone.

We need top vets, they need youthful injection.

Struble + CGY 1st, next we draft Schaefer, then we trade two of Matheson, Barron, Mailloux for a hard worker in front.

Interesting take, unless the CGY/FLA 1st ends up within lottery range, I’d consider it.

If however the pick is in the top-16, I’d rather bundle it with an early second (and a prospect?) to climb in the hopes of drafting a C like Desnoyers or a RHD like Hensler/Tretheway, depending on the Habs’ 1st round pick.

In any event, trading Matheson at 50% next offseason should definitely be considered. No point in re-signing him with the current LHD pipeline, even more so if Schaefer is drafted; Matheson should rather be the anchor of a trade for a top-4 RHD / middle-6 C.

Barron doesn’t hold much value as it stands; might nevertheless be better to include him in a package to leverage his 1st round pick pedigree before he further devaluates, especially if Mailloux has a strong finish.

With Savard likely gone at TDL, the Habs should indeed be able to give an audition to Mailloux. Might then win his place as the third pairing RHD behind Veteran X (Matheson trade or UFA) and Reinbacher for 2025-2026 and beyond.

Everyone focusing on Jiricek, but I feel like the habs actually have a decent amount of expendable assets to look for more proven pieces.

They have a boatload of picks. Barron, Roy, Matheson, and even Mailloux are very good trade bait. People will say I'm being homer, but actually look at the type of prospects that change hands in trades, it's usually these type of players.

I don't think HuGo pulls off anything major until they see what they have in Laine.

it would be nice to get a proven top pairing D-man though. That would really stabilize things.

I'd be a lot more excited for a decent veteran 2C, that's for sure. People are expecting Jiricek to have an immediate impact, but he's very much a project ATM. He's not a whole lot closer than Mailloux is to the big time, I like the kid a lot, but people really need to realize that.

Franky, I'm pretty sure your "Jiricek is getting traded in the next 24-48 hours" elapsed.

I'm starting to think that the whole "lots of trade chatter" thing is just wind at this point, caused by so many teams being trash.
Never forget that news outlet these days are not selling news because nobody is paying for news anymore they are selling adds and the best way to sell adds is not news but clickbait titles and misleading thumbnails.

I'd call for Trouba personally. He's not the best dman around but he's a big physical RH dman with lot of experience. Price would need to be near 0 though and Anderson would probably need to go the other way.
