Playing for the first overall now, I don’t see Hughes making any serious moves before selling off assets at the deadline for picks.
As I’ve stated several times, the 2025 off season will be the time for Hughes to really make hay.
With pylons like Dvorak, Armia set to leave via UFA, they’ll likely be dealt but won’t return much (if anything).
Savard is the biggest prize, and will likely be moved at the deadline. If the stars align, he may garner a first round pick in return if the Habs retain and take on some salary/junk from a contender looking to shore up their defense for a playoff run.
I think Evans likely stays and re-signs here but that will be up to Hughes, otherwise he is moved (and could return something of interest).
Pezz is likely dealt on or before the deadline and will return nothing. Will not be re-signing here with the anti toughness policy in place by Marty Saint John.
Then you have the 4.2 million coming off the books for the retention on the Allen and Petry deals respectively. Gives the Habs 19 million in free cap - (strictly from all UFA’s walking).
Slaf and Guhle’s raises kick in which will eat up about 11 million roughly of that, which should give us 18 million or so to play with to pursue UFA’s and move players up from the minors/re-sign with the club.
Who do we pursue?
A right hand shot defenseman?
A top 6 center?
Do we stand pat and wait another year?
Personally I’d like to see them add Sam Bennett (if he makes it to UFA status). Would add a reliable second line center, adds some much needed snarl and veteran leadership into the top 6, and gives us a left hand shot center.
I’d explore the market on Mike Matheson after that, see what’s out there. Pretty sure he’d garner a fair return at 50 percent retention. He’s being asked to do too much at the moment and would settle into a second pairing role, with a defensively minded partner very nicely. Less is more with Matheson.
On draft day, I hope to emerge with:
1st overall pick - James Hagens (finally the Habs get their white elephant of the past 3 decades, an eventual top line center with elite talent).
Flames/Panthers whatever overall pick in the first round - Charlie Tretheway. Im a huge fan of this player. Big, right handed shot, smooth skating and physical defender. Used in all situations, he has a powerful shot. I think he’d be a perfect fit with Lane Hutson down the road.
Promote forwards Owen Beck, Luke Tuch from the AHL to the big squad, Mailloux on defense and Dobes in the net.
Trade: Alex Newhook, Jayden Struble and Mike Matheson for a solid right hand shot defender - Perhaps Andersson?
Habs lineup looks like:
Caufield - Suzuki - Slafkovsky
Demidov - Bennett - Dach
Heineman - Hagens - Gallagher
Tuch - Beck - Anderson
Guhle - Andersson
Hutson - Tretheway
Xhekaj - Mailloux
Montembeault
Dobes
