Not a very attractive solution, but with the Sharks getting Liljegran I wonder if Cody Ceci might be someone Hughes looks at given he wouldn't be a very expensive option.

He can log lots of minutes, kills penalties and plays the right side, plus he's a UFA at the end of the year.

Ceci is awful. It's amazing the rope you get when you are a former first rounder.

Who do you have him replace?
What are we going to ship out for him?

Consideration: He's got a NTC with a 16 teams list. How likely is he to waive for a team like Montreal ?

Further: I have interests in getting Romanov back if we can ship out Matheson. Goal is to increase physicality.
Dach would stay a winger in that scenario, for the immediate future at least, which might be for the best. The Isles are in desperate need of a good prospect influx, so a few of our better young guys would go the other way most likely. Arber, Beck, Kapanen, Roy, Barron, Mailloux, guys like that. There would need to be one vet involved to round out the numbers, Anderson, maybe? It's all a non-starter if Nelson has no intention of playing in Montreal and okaying the trade, obviously.

The biggest issue here is Nelson's list being 16 teams long. That's likely because he'll put all teams he doesn't trust to make the playoffs on it. He's 33, I doubt he waives for Montreal. He's just the kind of guy contenders will go after, we're no where near that.

Ceci is a third pairing guy who had to play over his head in Edmonton on the second pair, while also covering for Nurse who is an absolute disaster. He just played the third most minutes on D on a team who made the 7th game of the finals, so I think he'd be able to help our shit D more than what we currently have.

I'd hope Hughes is aiming higher, but given his reluctance to move assets so far I don't think he is willing to overpay for anyone especially with teams always looking for RHD.

We are currently stuck watching Savard struggle through playing 20+ minutes a night so any option would be better at this point, at least a guy like Ceci is able to skate.

We have zero need for a 33 year old right now.
We have several on the line up. Maybe you should understand that stop gaps and plugs are necessary for when your young dazzling players aren't so dazzling at all. What is needed at the moment is stability on defense and physicality up front. I don't care how old they are as long as their contracts are expiring either this season or the next.

I'm expecting this. A little while ago I was looking at the list of UFA RD and there's only one who is a Quartexxxx client - Cody Ceci.

Pepper your angus, fellers.

Parayko is a massive fish, he should yield a few points by himself. And next year even more. Pushes everyone down and not having Matheson is addition by subtraction. (Hutson on the PP is a +, Guhle takes his spot every where else, Parayko takes Guhles spot.)
I get he is a massive fish, but he will not land in this pond unless we are playoff team. Look at Marian Hossa. Hawks missed PO for consecutive years, but their young core improved from 59 pts to 65, 71, 88. In 2008-09 they finally made the PO with young core and lost in conference finals. This was the main reason why he signed with them and refused better contract with Oilers, because he know he can be the missing piece of puzzle and this team will give him 5 years of cup contending. But we are not there yet, if we get there, we will attract the sharks.

Brock Nelson would be a nice player to have but there is no reason for the Islanders to sell him to us for stopgap prices so there's no real fit there.

I am praying for that kind of addition, for exactly those reasons.
Parayko or Andersson would be massive adds that would change the results so much...

Pietrangelo could also be an option? Although 8x3 is rough especially at 34 35 36.

I'd also look at McNabb, it's his last year.
Josh Manson could also be another good vet that would be on the cheaper end. 2x 4.5, that's where keeping Kovacevic and dangling him for the saved salary could've been huge, instead of getting a 3rd.

A Cernak for Matheson+picks swap? Tampa saves 1.5 on salary, might be big for them.

Andersson is good but his play right now make him a no go. Both his price of acquisition and his extension is going to be insane. Add to that the Flames winning right now...

I don't see Cernak being traded at all. Even less in division. Tampa's right side would look like sh*t without Cernak. That being said, I would pay for Cernak.

You have given the reason why we don't need old vets. We ALREADY have several in the lineup to unload.

A few of the UFAs will need to be replaced next off-season. Habs will be even more attrocious with an even younger line-up next year.
They'll have their savior Demigod.. There's no way fans will be convinced until it comes crashing into our faces, like Laine's injury.

I know many do not like Zegras , but if this guy is up for cheap is it a bad idea to get him ?

Why is it needed? To make the playoffs?

It ain't happening.

And a couple of old vets is not going to change anything about it, except making them loose valuable draft picks.

Any trades right now is a bad idea. You won't get a good return compared to waiting to the trade deadline, and starting to panic because of how bad the team is doing is also a recipe for disaster.
