I don’t think Bowey is the solution Habs are looking for in D. Hughes has said openly he’s working on making a deal, so this isn’t speculation or rumours. Habs want to deal and have said as much.
What do you think of Hughes’ stated plan of nabbing someone off the wire using their first ranking claiming priority?

There always seem to be decent guys who get cut on the last day but can they get someone who is more than just decent?

Ok man, but you need a partner to dance.

Teams usually focus on their training camp and start of the season at this point, barring a major injury to someone I doubt any moves will be made.

Of course, HuGo will say he's open for business 24/7 what else can he say?

None of those are vets that can be counted on to eat NHL minutes. Bowey is the closest but he’s hurt and never played with anyone on the Habs. Still need veteran presence, not my words, Habs managements.
Bowey is only a depth D. Now 27, he’s on his 5th team. He has shown a limited offensive game. Has size at 6’2 but doesn’t use it.

He’s a guy with great skating ability so his mobility and size had to have been motivating factors for Hughes to sign him however he’s only played 4 NHL games total in the last two seasons. I didn’t check his injury situation but that was probably behind it.

Just a depth guy that you can plug into a lineup when you don’t want to use too many rookies at a given time.

With Edmundson out,
Matheson - Savard
Guhle - Scheuneman
Wideman - Harris
Bowey

That's only 2 rookies.

Caufield - Suzuki - Anderson
Dadonov - Dvorak - Gallagher
Monahan - Dach - Hoffman
Drouin - Evans - Pitlick
Armia

Byron on IR

That's 13 forwards. Who knows when Byron will be back, but it doesn't seem like it will be anytime soon. No need to make a trade right now.

Habs have no need for cap space at the trade deadline. We're the ones that will be selling off many assets.

They've been working on trading forwards the whole summer, and it hasn't happened yet. Camp doesn't really open up trades, injuries do. I don't think any team is in dire need of making a trade for a forward right now. If you're a GM, you would rather start the season and see what you have first.

Even if there were a few teams that really needed a forward, I doubt they would give up the assets that Hughes would want in a trade for Drouin/Dadonov/Monahan (50% retention).
Great at pointing out current situation but you fail to show how shallow it is and that Habs are working on making changes. Just because it hasn’t happens yet doesn’t mean anything. Teams are figuring out their teams, injuries happen, players don’t make the cut etc etc etc. Hughes has shown a trade can come at anytime for players no one even knew where on the board. This is no different and not the Bergevin era. Management have been very clear and articulated what they want and that’s to move a forward or two and add to the D.

Also, I’ll add that Guhle, Harris and Scheuneman all in D, makes 3 NHL rookies.

Exactly. Some people think he’s a solution when he’s not. Management had made it clear what they want, so I’m lost as to why some posters are acting like this team is going to be the same moving forward. I mean when the GM, President and coach are all saying the same thing, you’d think they’d listen.

They couldn’t be more clear and open that they want another veteran D, no more than 2 rookie Ds in tue lineup and to shed some forwards. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills arguing with some that think Habs are done and this is the team. Like, WTF is going on?!?! Just because it hasn’t happened at the beginning of training camp means it’ll never happen.

If there is one thing we’ve learned from HuGo is that predicting what trade will happen next, is near impossible.

Great post, but I think cap space might be valuable for the Habs to facilitate some trade at the trade deadline, even if we will first and foremost sell assets.

HuGo also said he will not pay assets to move contracts!

Who is he trading right now without paying to trade them?

And for the veteran D, he only said ideally we would like to add a veteran D!

So I have no idea why you're going crazy here...

You’re assuming he has to pay assets to trade a player when the reality is you have no idea what he can get for anyone on the roster. Not to mention it’s training camp and teams are still making decisions on their roster as they’re still fluid. So let’s not play the “he has to give up a 1st to trade player X game,” when no one actually knows what the prices are.

As for D, they were quite transparent in their need for depth and not relying/throwing in rookies to fill the gaps. The mantra of this management has been constant in that they’ll do what’s best for the players development and they do not want more than 2 rookie D in the lineup. Between waivers and trades during or after camp, it’s a sure thing they’re looking at veteran options to add.

Why I’m going crazy is these posts about how things are fine the way they are, lineups with 3+ rookie D in the lineup are fine and trades or changes probably won’t happen because Habs are in a good spot. They’re not and they’ve said as much. So thieve comments that go in direct opposition to the ones made by the people who actually make the decisions are baffling to say the least. If they say they want to add players, get rid of others and are actively looking at their options, believe them.

HuGo has no allegiance or connection whatsoever to Drouin. They’ll just look at the cold, hard facts and if the player didn’t make a case for himself, there will be no reason to carry him.
He just doesn't fit, not a top 6 guy anymore, and is not a bottom 6 guy either...............weird situation.
He does however fit very nicely on LTIR.

Thought I read something, where he has softened his stance on adding assets..........realizing he has to like every other team that has had to...........our deadwood is going nowhere, without some sugar added.

I think Jo Drouin gets shipped to Jets or Avs at the deadline. The history with Mac and Ehlers might entice the teams to take a swing.

Certainly Habs would retain cashola

Why Chychrun — how badly do we need a player who has never been able to stay healthy in any of his NHL seasons during those years when he’s supposed to be at his best, health wise?

Who wants to pay the asking price and gamble that he’ll suddenly stop being injury-prone? I’m hoping some other team does it.
plus TSN says he will be a fig

So will McDavid, Hedman, Vasilevski, etc etc etc... What else is new from Toronto sports reporters?

Can't wait to see their reaction when Mathews takes his talents to Arizona. How many times will they show Mathews wearing Coyotes pajama's as a kid?

I really don't understand this subs fixation on paying draft capital to dump contracts. Its just so antithetical to what the team is doing right now. If the player is bad then they wont be played, but paying to dump a contract when you're planning to be bad is just dumb.

Yeah and he only has 2 or 3 years on his contract, not in our window. This is a guy that maybe the Leafs look at , we shouldn't.

Dvorak has been in trade rumours ever since Hughes took over.
I think he gets traded this year.

There are multiple possible options that could take his place in the top 9 starting next year:
-Evans
-Beck
-Monahan
-Dubois
-Top draft pick this year

What about trading Khudobin + ? vs Futur consideration and after we trade the ? that where getting with Hoffman to Arizona (Tourigny know him).

We would get depth in our G group and Hughes know him very well since he was his agent
