Proposal: Trade MTL - NJ

Caufield probably has more value in a vacuum but Devils need a player like Mercer more than a player like Caufield. We have Holtz that we hope turns into similar player as Caufield . No point giving up Mercer for Caufield and especially not for adding anything to Mercer.
Mercer probably won’t put up the points Caufield does but Mercer is going to be a stud with an excellent all around game that can do everything . I pass on any deal involving Mercer.

Dawson Mercer has been since the start of the season what Caufield was to the Habs during the playoffs and better defensively.

This kid will be special and I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if he turned out to be one of the best players from his draft.

Caufield is a better sniper but Mercer is better at everything else IMO. The Devils crushed it by picking him 18th overall.

NJ passes easily.
they give up the younger player who is also a C and succeeding in the NHL for a 1 dimensional shooter, who needs his daddy to protect him from being taunted ...then they also add a 1st.

jack hughes .... chemistry ....

just because two players showed chemistry in juniors, they don't make good linemates in the nhl. picture hughes and caufield in one corner and tom wilson in the other. if you still feel, that's a good idea, you either have no idea about hockey or you are a montreal fan. most likely both.

This Mercer kid looks like someone that should be a core player for NJ.

I can’t imagine NJ has any actual interest in trading him plus a 1st round pick. That really doesn’t compute.

I really like Mercer and was hoping we'd draft him. However Cole's goal scoring ability is hard to pass on. Tough one for me, but I'm probably a little high on Mercer and neutral on Caufield

That's where the disconnect exists. Mercer is showing signs of becoming a reliable two way center. He's starting to kill penalties for example and is already the number two guy at center with Hughes out. His advanced numbers look pretty good. That said, Caufield should score more than Mercer. Caufield is an excellent player and I doubt many NJ fans are basing their opinions on the idea that Mercer will score more than Caufield. Mercer can have a cold streak and still contribute. He's a center and those have positional value over wingers. NJ fans saying Mercer fills a more important role in NJ than Caufield would is not a referendum on Caufield as a prospect.

Habs should've drafted Mercer instead of Guhle, I was saying it at draft day and still saying it today.

Timmins is a goof, the fact that he's still there even if he's abysmal since 2008 baffles me.

In 2018 they went for their ''reset on the fly'' with the same guy in charge of the draft that got them there in the first place. Just plain goofy management...

Mercer is a pretty good player, but Kaiden Guhle is a stud defenseman. I think it's a pretty good pick there.

Idk about being better than Mercer but Guhle is quite the talent

I wanted him at 18, before he was taken.
