I think both teams really like their prospects and don't want to move them. New Jersey is a young team in a tough position, so not in a place to move their first. Montreal is a team off to a slow start, and shouldn't trade their young goal scorer. There's literally no reason for each team to do this, and I didn't even consider value.

From what we’ve seen from Mercer so far, I’m not convinced Caulfield ends up the better player when all is said and done. Certainly not worth another first rounder on top of Mercer. Subban is off the books at the end of this year so moving him does nothing when they’re already loaded with cap space. And Chariot is fine but not really doing anything for the value here.

Why would either team do this. Habs have needed a potential pure goal scorer for some time and Mercer is having a nice start in Jersey....also this puts the team above the cap.

Habs should've drafted Mercer instead of Guhle, I was saying it at draft day and still saying it today.

Timmins is a goof, the fact that he's still there even if he's abysmal since 2008 baffles me.

In 2018 they went for their ''reset on the fly'' with the same guy in charge of the draft that got them there in the first place. Just plain goofy management...

The worse thing that happened to MTL.... Stanley cup finals.
Same as in 2014 vs Rangers, Poor team evaluation, they were not that good and next season was a disaster.
Overvalue the players... Subban in 2014 (9M) , Suzuki in 2021 (8M)

Again, they are not that good, both years Price saved Bergevin and the coaching staff.

Will Molson do the right thing?

mercer is arguably our best prospect, there's no way in hell he gets moved. caufield is going to be a hell of a player, enjoy him.

I think NJ easily says no. The 2022 1st is an overpay.

Habs have no reason to move Caufield. This trade would feel very forced from their end.

I down vote this proposal.

Nope from this habs fan.

Caufield isn't moving. We can get a 2nd for choarot at the trade deadline and we're taking on subban's shitty contract.

So Montreal is going to trade a player who is on track to become a star for the next 15 years...because of 1 bad week?

Holy overrated. Mercer has one tap in goal and people think he's better than caufield.

Not saying that MTL says "yes" but NJ says "no" for two reasons:

1) The promise Mercer has shown so far is something that is extremely hard to give up on,
2) Because we are New Jersey, we really shouldn't trade our own 1st round picks. Winning 2 games is cool but this pick may very well end up being top 5.

Consider reuniting Hughes and Caufield.
You already have 2 good centers (Hughues and Hischier)
Protect the 1st round (top 5).... deal?

I think it's a fair deal, not an easy one to make.

Literally nobody said that.

To be fair, one poster said that Caufield may not end up the better player. That aside, basing your view of something on one person's statement and extrapolating it to a broad brush stroke is typically intellectually lazy and petty.

No thanks. Mercer is a very versatile player. Can play center or wing. Can play scoring or shutdown roll. Basically u can put him anywhere in the lineup and he will play well

I'm guessing that because many Devil fans have said they wouldn't take the deal means they're saying Mercer will be the better player.
When at least for me, the difference between Caufield and Mercer isn't even close to an additional unprotected 1st in a deep draft
