Confirmed with Link: Trade deadline thread

The PensXYZ Guide to the TDL:

1. Do not look at what has done, concentrate on what has not been done.
2. Read what the Pens might do but create your own arbitrary demands that will never reach Dubas or the FO.
3. Make obscene value judgments.
4. Assign a value to each confirmed trade using the following formula:
Our trade: Dubas got bad value. Insert arbitrary demand of (actual pick received + one round) and (inclusion of team's best prospect determined by draft ranking and draft year). If 1st round pick was received, insert arbitrary demand of (one additional 1st round pick).
Any other teams' trade: Good value and include "I wish Dubas would have done that".
5. Until a trade is announced, post negative comments about how Dubas won't trade them.
6. Post comments suggesting the TDL has passed even though it has not.

I mean we have no one on waivers so we can’t have too many forwards or D we can trade without being at a deficit, one each by my calculations assuming Novak and Schenn are available to play Friday…that means all of Beau, Acciari, and Rakell won’t be traded…maybe only one of them…and probably not both of Grz and Schenn
The only reason the Pens would need to have put anyone on waivers is if they were sending a player down to make cap space. They don't need to do that.
For one, they've got around 11M in pro-rated cap space for the deadline already.
For another, they're sellers, so they're not exactly looking to bring in more cap space than they ship out, in the end (though, as above, they've got 11M to work with in terms of bringing back cap dumps to make trades work, if they need to).

It's not like they haven't managed to net the same number of players via their trades so far:
- Petterson and DOC out, Heinen and Desharnais in
- Desharnais and Bunting out, Novak and Schenn in (yes, those were two different trades, but the net result was no change in the number of roster players)

This would be a failure of a deadline if they were the case

I can't say that without knowing for sure what is being offered. I wouldn't trade Rakell right now if someone was offering something like 2 1sts for him. I'd absolutely require a notable young NHLer or top prospect in any Rakell deal.

Is it worth trading him for a late 2025 first? It’s a sellers market for sure but you still need a buyer to pay.

They're very probably getting offered more than that.

Like I said, whether I'd trade Rakell right now depends on whether someone is offering a young NHL player/top prospect for him. I'm not trading Rakell for 2 1sts even if that value is great for Rakell. Using LA, I want one of Clarke, Greentree or Turcotte to even entertain trading Rakell.

No offense but that's f-ing crazy. I'll buy a plane ticket and drive him to the airport myself if someone is offering 2 1sts for him.

Rakell is far too valuable of an asset right now to just settle on getting magic beans that won't be ready for 3-5 years (if they're ever ready). I'm not dismissing the value of 1st rounders, but they're not the primary piece the Penguins should be targeting in a Rakell trade.

This market is insane right now and Rakell may legitimately be the only scoring top-6 winger available. If I'm not getting a young NHLer or top prospect that's near NHL ready for him as the primary piece, I'm probably not trading him. Rakell is too valuable of a piece right now to just settle on draft picks for him.

IMO if you can only get picks for him, you hold onto him until the draft to see if someone else offers better than just picks.

Did you break into Gurgles house and get his notes or something?

The Penguins are going to stink for 3-5 years so it doesn't exactly matter if it takes that long for those picks to bear fruit.

But even if you want to try to rebuild faster than that (and Dubas supposedly does) you can use those picks in other trades to get the good "NHL ready" young players Dubas is supposedly looking for.

Now would I just trade him for a like a first and not much else? Eh, I'd have to think about it. I probably still would because I'm worried about his game falling off next year (he is turning 32 this year after all).

They don't need to trade him before the deadline if they're just getting offered picks. If they're only getting offered picks, they should just wait until closer to the draft to see if someone else steps up and offers a better fit for what they're looking for.

Rakell is a 32 year old signed for 3 more years. If you get anything close to two firsts in value, you take it and run imo. Holding out for a prospect or young NHLer seems like a great way to miss out in an insane sellers market.

I think we disagree on the value of picks then. Imo when it comes to trades most teams would prefer getting a first round pick to an already existing prospect.

Teams would rather have the pick so that they can use it to make their own selection on a player they want.

Like I think two first round picks have more value as trade assets than Rakell by himself does. For one thing, they open up more teams as trade options. Someone like Buffalo probably doesn't give half a shit about a 32 year old scoring winger. But if the Pens had a first round pick, maybe they can use that to pry away one of Buffalo's younger players.

Yeah I fully disagree with this. I'd 100% take Greentree from LA over a 1st rounder.

Two firsts is an absolute easy yes for me. If you are dead set on getting a young player take those picks and trade them for said young player. If they have an offer on the table of two first round picks and turn it down that’s a fireable offense. Rakell is notably streaky and tends to be an every other year guy. Two years ago he was good, last year not so much, now he’s good again this year. I’m not chancing him falling off and passing up two first round picks. That’s insane

Oh boy, Yohe dropped another rumor article. Guess what he said?

The same shit he's been saying the entire time

But for real:

Many of my league sources think Rakell will be traded, but some Penguins sources aren’t convinced simply because of how large the asking price is. Plus, Dubas doesn’t feel obligated to move Rakell, knowing full well that he can very easily move him this summer or next summer. Of course, no one knows what the market will look like in coming months or if it will be as seller-friendly as it is now.

As weird as it sounds, I'm inclined to believe that Yohe has league sources but no Penguins sources. Yohe seems to have no connection to Dubas and the Penguins current FO, but I'd believe it more if he had just general league connections.

This Rakell situation kind of feels like JR with Fleury at the 2016 draft. MAF was "available" if a team like Calgary was willing to do something stupid like trade their top-10 pick. Otherwise he wasnt actually for sale

Sell Rakell now....there isn't going to be a better scenario than right now. Picks, prospects, young NHLer...whatever. Pull the f' trigger now!
