That if we do poorly in those 5 games, we sell. Period. Clear. Precise. Obvious. My opinion became a fact when Hughes said it himself. But somehow, you decide to disregard what he said to fit your poorly reasoned narrative. Cheers.

I don't understand this gripe.

It basically sums up to: if we're out of the playoff picture, they would have sold, but since they're clearly within the playoff picture, they didn't.

How does that not make sense ?

We dont want to breakup the room but we'll get rid of those 4 anyways in 2 months.

Say it however you want
That's bad management.

So what if Savard gets you a late 3rd and Armia a late 2nd

Turn those picks to get a better pick or use them in a trade to get something you need , like you add an extra 2nd pick to favor a trade.

I will legit puke if i see
Evans Armia Dvorak Gallagher Anderson Dach and Newhook as our bottom 6 next year.

Evans Heineman and perhaps Newhook should be there and the rest all gone. All terrible veterans bringing almost nothing

Same goes for Savard
People keep saying our d-squad is terrible but hey the chemistry is there , lets not change it and get better.

Which teams in the East are clearly not within the playoff picture? How do you determine this?

As I think Hughes mentioned (in a quote earlier this thread), there's really a limit to how many players you can draft, sign, and develop. Getting more picks, when we already have a lot, is not as useful as keeping the team competitive and maintaining this key period of development. Perhaps he could have made a move for a 2C, but as we saw, it would have required moving a comparable player in the other direction, on a day when buying was expensive, and nobody on this board seemed ready for that eventuality. The gift to the players was not trading anybody. That seems like a decent reward for recent efforts. I'm sure players appreciate that none among them was traded, or that hasty decisions weren't taken with prospects. I can't believe people were proposing trading Hage for a 2C. F that, I want to see Hage in a Habs jersey. I still have some patience left to see this project through.
Lets see how the team responds.

This is why it was a sellers market. Not as many teams wanted to sell due to the amount of them still in it. I guess both Boston and Long Island decided to throw the towel, but they've been on a downswing with old rosters rather than rebuilding teams trying to take a step forward. This is without mentioning the business side of a potential playoff birth, both if they make it and if they get close. 4 wins is definitely a quite significant hump to get over. 1-2 points is still within an interesting margin if your team is a young one trying to make it.

If this is true then HuGo pulled a BargainBin. I doubt it is, most likely a 7th rounder for Armia and HuGo declined.

I think Armia would have easily garnered a second. He's huge, great along the boards, can play the third and fourth line and has been excellent on the PK. Every contending team would have been interested, especially with retention.

Proud of Kent Hughes for standing pat and not acquiring assets in exchange for bums like Dvorak and Armia. This is a proud man. A capable man. A no BS man. Kent Hughes only gets ripped off by his friends.

Quite the day. Some teams stacked up. Biggest trade deadline ever.
I'm always reminded of Brian Burke's wise admonition that more mistakes are made at the trade deadline than on any other day in the year. But it is quite possible that doing nothing is, in itself, a mistake.

In my opinion, with the team still in the playoff mix, there were no great lost opportunities by holding on to Armia and Savard.

I would love nothing more than the Habs making the playoffs. Even if they get absolutely pumped in 4 games. I just don't see a "in the mix" category this year when most teams in the East are "in the mix". This is due to the parity in the league, but that can't be a goal if you want to establish progress.

Hughes is no fool. If he could have maximized what he had and turned it into something that could have helped the team, he would have done it.

If he allows those UFA's to walk on July 1, what is the loss? Armia was on waivers twice, Savard needs to retire, Dvorak is a barely an NHL player and Gallagher has no value because of his contract.

Anderson is the same as Gallagher, Newhook is a 3rd liner and Laine is someone we were paid to take. Dach is a reclamation project gone wrong.

What could he have done? I would have liked a stop gap center but it must not have been available.
I feel he could have gotten a 2nd for armia. But id rather keep armia and push for playoffs

Savard I don't see getting a 2nd. All his comparables that got traded today are better than him. I think he would have fetched a 3rd

I agree. It's not a long term goal. However, it's a realistic goal for this year considering they drafted 1, 5 and 5 the last three years. A pick around 13-18 would signify progress ... As long as moves are made this summer. I thought there wasn't much to do last summer, but this summer management has quite a few things to take care of.

If we were in the Flames position who have no competition with the Canucks basically giving up on the season, this would be more tolerable for me. But with this many teams close in the East, this isn’t okay to me. The main additions have to be in the offseason anyways.
