No, the old CBA had a thing where if you were claimed off re entry waivers the teams split the salary and cap hit. I think they went away with the new CBA, although I'm not 100%

If they are retaining next years salary as well, then i'd say it was a pretty awesome trade. If not, he's going to just be dead money, and Carolina must have really wanted to get rid of him.
