Trade Darnell Nurse

Honestly surprised after all this that Nurse didn't do his patented scoring a goal thing that he usually does every time fans are all over him for sucking. Only things that went in the net off him went into our net :(. No Nurse goals since Jan 26. Think 6 or so off him into our net since the trade deadline :(

No, but I listened to him today talk about it. He basically took the angle of admitting it was not from any info he was given, just that they were one year closer to challenging his NTC "IF" they chose

So you are calling an article clickbait without actually reading the article?

It says in the article that this was done after he talked to people within in the organization.

You can call him a liar if you want but he's putting his money where his mouth is and passing along what's he's heard.

You 100% have to keep Murphy if you get Rielly. And honestly, the goal should be to shelter Rielly and pump him up to try to trade him next summer anyways. His contract is way easier to move than Nurse's if he can have even a decent season.
The Oilers are in no position to pump players middling players careers with McDavid on the line.

No one is pulling us out of the hole we are already in. If getting rid of Nurse's terrible deal is a 2 step process, it is what it is. Step one in this case would be accepting that Rielly has a way better contract in terms of cap hit, and buyout cost. He's not an ideal player, but could still be workable in the lineup. If he has a bounce back year, great, should be way easier to move the next summer than Nurse would be after another typical Nurse season.

I'm not as down on Rielly as many others here. I think with ~30% time against top comp that he got in Toronto (which would actually be more than Nurse was given in 24/25), and a good defensive partner, he could be a passable player on our 2nd pair. Guess I'm also just accepting that Bowman is not that good, and we can't expect any miracles with how we would move Nurse.

Rielly is good at all the things Nurse is bad at: making breakout passes and hockey sense.

These are all things that the Oilers need based on our style of play.

Nurse is supposedly good at all the things Rielly isn’t good at, like physical play. But really, how good is Nurse at those things anyway?

So maybe from Nurse to Rielly you downgrade in physical play and in zone defending from a 5 to a 4, but you’re upgrading the passing ability and hockey sense from a 5 to a 7-8.

The contract is also miles better.

It’s an easy yes for me.

Im just saying. Lets say we offer the Sharks Nurse for Coutures LTIR salary

Now we free up the entire 9.15 million. Drawback is no LTIR for us. However 9.15 million plus about 5 million we have play for is 14 million for 2 to 3 impact players.

100% I would take that deal over Rielly. That would be quite a gift from the Sharks to help us out like that too, only 1 year to deal with Couture's LTIR vs many years of Nurse. I just have a hard time imagining it would be that easy, but I would drive Nurse to the airport myself if it is!

Me waiting for Nurse to be traded

It’s not going to happen. We have one more year with McDavid, one last shot at a cup, why would he agree to leave that now when he could wait until next summer when it’s time to blow things up anyway?

I'd be fine with a Rielly for Nurse trade. In fact, i have talked about it for a while. The reasons are as you lay out. Rielly in Edmonton would have the potential to play a lot vs bottom six players and he has been fine in the role. Given him time with a third line with some skill and I think he helps out more than Nurse.

In the end though I think he would be easier to move if you choose to do so later. The contract structure is better with no signing bonuses.

Yeah, I had that thought as well, but we can do more if Nurse is gone.

Both Walman and Ekholm’s extensions with full NMCs were bad business by Bowman last offseason.
An excellent GM interview question is how will you navigate every joe average demanding a NMC?

COVID really f***ed the Oilers.

If that didn’t happen McDavid probably has two more 110+ point seasons, plus the cap goes up normally and the Oilers have more room to build better rosters.

And Nurse probably gets a 7M contract.
Covid really screwed the Oilers. I bet Nurse gets under 7...

Covid also f***ed the Lightning bad.

They probably keep Coleman, Goodrow and 3 pete in 2022

I'm starting to think we have 2 shots and he walks himself to FA/resigning. I don't know if his mind will be made up after this year.

If we don't win he may stay. (if we have a good roster) This is all on Bowman now.

Fingers crossed for 2 more years but Lebrun reported a couple weeks ago that Connor doesn’t want to leave the Oilers with nothing in return if he leaves, and part of signing for 12.5 was to help Edmonton get a solid return in a trade

That is a very good point (sadly) and the way leon was talking this may be the last year unless we really improve.
