That Knies trade would have made the Carlo and Laughton trade look brilliant by comparison. Tre is an idiot. He should never get another GM job again. That's almost JFJ levels of incompetence. You're trading a 23 year old recent 30 goal scoring powerforward to a division rival and you don't even get their top prospect? What a clown!

Larkin would be a great add in that 2C slot, especially given his speed paired with Willy but it unfortunately won’t happen.

Detroit will probably look at making a hockey trade that sees a young center going to Detroit. Anaheim seems like a pretty good fit with McTavish going to Detroit along with a left handed defenceman, maybe Mintyukov.

Just feels odd that the Leafs would even contemplate moving Knies. I wonder if there was something more that we don't know about off ice. Complete speculation on my part. I am sure 34 would have loved that.

How on earth would they consider trading a young power forward for anything less that a young potential top two C or top pair D. Of course Mtl would do this deal, their mgmt is competent. Once they said no to Hage plus the phone should have been dropped.

One I don't think ROR waives to go to Detroit. But two, I am not convinced that these super win-now moves are in our best interest. We can remain competitive with more moderate and opportunistic moves IMO. Big starting point is landing Raddysh and possibly Ferraro, and solidifying our bottom-6 via a couple of signings / trades (Colton, etc). The 2C we can leave open to exploring.

ROR doesn't have any trade protection built into his contract. I know they will try not to send him to a place he doesn't want to go, but if Josi was willing to waive and you could get that package I would send him there in a heartbeat. Plus he only has one year left on his deal.

Funniest part of Treiliving was that instead of trying to trade aging vets like OEL, this guy zeroed in on trading a young 70 point power forward.

It's actually crazy how much time this dude wastes on things that he shouldn't

imagine he was an actual good GM and started actively shopping our guys 2-3 weeks before. Say after the 2nd vegas loss.

If he had his shit together and was competent I wonder if we don't get more for both laughton + mcmann, and deal some other players for picks/prospects like lorentz, benoit, OEL, Woll/Stolarz, Carlo

There were reports that Tre was also very difficult to deal with and turned other gms to other avenues with his act during trades and him being all over the place could play a part in it.

Treliving was terrible when here but he just didn't wake up one morning and say "I'm going to trade Knies today, let me call up Montreal".

This type of move is one that you would talk alot with your scouting staff, so as much as it's fun to dunk on Treliving for this potential move, it also means that our scouting staff most likely signed off on this deal centered around Zharovsky.

Same with the Carlo deal. Our scouting department signed off that this was a good player to acquire.

Or it was environmentally driven and Treliving succumbed to the pressure (again) and sought buy-in from his staff asking for a best case scenario.

That’s the mindset of a “get-it-doner” that we see all over corporate positions, who believe that getting the goal across the line IS the goal, and at times at the expense of having gotten it right in the first place.

Hughes dressing down Treliving reads consistent with Treliving’s thought process and comments. Not contrasting Hughes as virtuous here, but it highlights how milquetoast our thankfully former GM operated.

Our pro scouting is bloody terrible and I can't honestly tell you the last time it wasn't. My only hope is Brackett comes into the organization and attacks that department with a baseball bat and starts again with some competent people who can identify talent properly

That could be true but I would say that our pro scouting has been consistently underwhelming for as long as I've followed the team.

Maybe we had a dysfunctional front office and Treliving was off on his own making moves he thought were good but most organizations are run were he would talk to Montreal, find out they were interested in Knies then go back to the scouting staff and have a deep debate on the incoming players.

This whole thing just seems very fishy to me.

I wouldn't guarantee that he talked to anyone in the org. Part of what Pelley said at one of the Press Conferences was that management wasn't on the same page, or some paraphrase like that. In my mind, this would be one of those times... where scouts would be... what the F are you doing?

I find it hard to believe that Treliving was going to trade a young power forward beast and not even run this by his scouting department.
