Projecting Engvall to get 1.75Mx3 and Sandin to get 1.75Mx2, with Kallgren as the back up, I have the Leafs with 3.669M in cap space to sign 4 forwards - or an average of 916K per player.

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Kerfoot - Tavares - Nylander
Engvall - Kampf - XXXXX
XXXXX - XXXXX - XXXXX
Simmonds

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Holl
Gio - Liljegren
Sandin

Murray
Kallgren

Either some combination of Muzzin, Holl, Kerfoot are going to be moved, or we are F’d

I have a feeling we either end up trading for Reimer/Adin Hill, or sign Halak for around 1M.

FWIW Adin Hill also has a past connection with Jon Elkin (when they were both with the Coyotes), and Halak is probably familiar with Curtis Sanford from their year together in the Canucks org.

Blackwood also used to attend Elkin's goalie school like Murray, but I doubt the Devils move him at this point unless they unexpectedly add another goalie.

The Leafs are in no position to rely on iffy promotions for the forward group when they've got the financial power of the $1M one way deal that can reel in instant depth with more advanced free agent forwards. Make Joey Anderson and Nick Robertson outplay John Doe who has over 100 NHL games and understands what it takes to play in the league.

It's really Hayton vs. McLeod, not McLeod vs. Bastian... McLeod is a very good 3C, with some further upside. Nothing against Bastian as a #4 LW... It's a good idea really.

Fair point on Balcers... Cap room is a concern... and I think it's a low risk, but I have room in my mock to take him as a waiver claim anyway.

Evander Kane has much more upside, and more snarl to his game. If it wasn't for his issues, he'd be at least a $8-9 million player. Fair enough, turn down that contract from Edmonton... go to free agency, and see that the market isn't what he thinks it is. Kane adds far more to the team, the risk is the clown show. I can see why you'd prefer Marchment, but I don't think he's near the player Kane is. Kane was nearly PPG, and 3 hits per game, and has a long history of offensive success. Marchment has one good season, that is likely his career high... plus Marchment can't fight very well, while Kane will stick up for this team in a way that we need. Particularly in a lineup that no longer has Simmonds.
I personally value McLeod differently. I view him as a poor 3C and good 4C. If we’re targeting NJ in a Holl deal I’d personally prefer Bastian. The Hayton deal was about finding a good fit for Sandin if he’s not going to play here.

I’m largely against Kane and largely for Marchment but again it’s just personal preference.

SJS and Grier are off to a questionable start (to me).

So I wouldn't be surprised if they cave to trading Hill. One of Reimer or Hill would be good, and I think you can maybe get one of them for a 3rd round pick.

Sandin will be making less than Lily, 1.2 or 1 million per. Both Clifford and likely Simmons will be waived to be sent to the Marlies freeing up 900 k and 760 k. The leafs actually have more to spend that shown. aprox 4 million for 4 bottom 6 forwards with a back up making 1.5 million per. There is no shortage of players available and not enough $$ to go around. There will be alot of good players singing PTO at the start of training camp.

A Sharks fan on the trade board was saying Grier would probably give us Hill at 50% retention if we gave them Ottawa's 3rd.

Also Frank Seravalli did a radio hit on 590 today and he said he believes Sharks want to keep Reimer and move Hill, even though most rumours have them doing the opposite.

I feel like Spezza to Gagner and Holl to Kulak are unnecessary downgrades and they come out more expensive. I don't want to run back the same team, but I don't want a worse team.

Matt Murray and Martin Jones is a grotesque goaltending duo. Just bloody awful.

Dylan Strome's going into his 6th pro season and still hasn't thrown a body check.
And Dylan Strome is a former 22 goal scorer. Who wouldnt take that on you third line especially on the cheap.

Hill doesn't have much of a track record... but I do like his size and potential. He hasn't played more than 40 games in a season since his Junior days so there is risk in terms of him taking the next step.

I think the Leafs probably would prefer Greiss or a veteran, but Hill would be really good and I think the Leafs would be interested.

We really need to try being a harder team to play against. At least for my personal enjoyment.

I miss having Tucker, Green, Roberts, Nolan and Corson all in the top-9 at the same time. Strome would be great if he had Lawson Crouse and Brady Tkachuk as his linemates. Not if he's being flanked by Alex Kerfoot and Sam Gagner. As great as that may work in the regular season.

Kid works hard, wouldn't mind him in the depth chart but idk about a spot in the starting rotation if the Leafs are actually going to be a cup contender

Neither does Samsonov (his limited track record is actual garbage), but Hill is going to come in at least 1M cheaper (assuming Samsonov makes 3M+ based on rumours) and is only 1 year older than Samsonov.
