Speculation: Trade and Free Agency - 2024-25

I mean, he would be burning quite a few bridges. Even if he COULD come back, why would any NHL team take the risk that he'll just bolt to Russia if things don't go his way? Don't need that headache for a (current) 4th liner.
It also could depend on conversations had with the organization. Maybe they would prefer he play in the KHL as opposed to our dumpster fire AHL team.

Realistically, he will be a top 6 center for Iowa for (maybe) the rest of the season. Hope he can develop his offensive game.

Saw that the Isles are actively trying to extend Brock Nelson right now before the trade deadline. All my fingers are crossed. I went out and got a rabbit foot.

I would take him here for rest of season, Put EK on IR for rest of season use that money then trade for Nelson and cheat system. But I wouldnt want him long term at his age at this point. But If we are Healthy with Nelson in playoffs I will take my chances

I'd rather have a 23 yo Rossi at 7M signed for 7 years than a 28 yo Rantanen at 13-14M signed for 7 years. That extra 7M could get you a nice player. I am not convinced that Rantanen is a guy who can drive play on a 1st line- I'm sure he would do well playing with Kaprizov, but so do a lot of players. The fact that he isn't doing well with Aho, who is a better C than anything we have, is a red flag for me, as are the complaints that the Avs fans had about him before he was traded.

To be perfectly clear, I would not even trade Yurov for him. In a salary cap world, young players performing well on ELC's are a must. You can't load up on a few expensive players and expect to win, as Toronto has proven.

Rossi is not signing anywhere near 7yrs for $7m and is not close to player Rantanen is. And that’s coming from a person who is far from a Rantanen fan.

Point is that we don't really know the kind of player Rantanen is without Mack. So far, he doesn't look that great with his new club. Not worth the risk for his price tag.

Honestly, I think he wants back with the Avs. And with the cap going up, they may be able to do it. Why trade for a guy who is determined to test free agency?

Yes but how will they be 5 years down the road, when Rossi is 28, and Rantanen 33? I even have large doubts about signing Kaprizov for big bucks long term, even though i love him when he's healthy. I know Rantanen has "outpointed" Kap, but he has been playing with a top 2 or 3 C and the best offensive D man in the game.

Also, surprised that that you think Rossi will fetch more than Boldy.

I don’t see Rossi being Rantanen level player ever, the gulf between what each would be in those next 5 years is significant enough to outweigh the final years of a Rantanen contract.

Rossi isn’t player Boldy is either but the cap is going up significantly and it would be malpractice if Rossi’s agent were to accept anywhere near what that cap figure on a long term deal. I don’t necessarily fault the Wild front office being tepid around a Rossi deal that is a fair bit richer than Boldy’s. Rossi has done a hell of a job to get himself where he is today but I think it’s fair to question if you are going to win at a high level with someone of his stature in the playoffs. It’s the same situation that the Wild have faced for years with Spurgeon and Brodin, quality players but questionable when the game changes. So I’d also be keeping my eyes open on potential upgrades. Assuming Rossi is on roster during the playoffs (also assuming they make it), what he does or doesn’t show in the postseason is going to seal his fate with this team I believe.

Let's see how he does in the playoffs and then we'll decide from there.

All the cap wizards, what does this team look like with Rantanen and Kaprizov extended minus a potential Rossi deal?
First year of Kaprizov's extension:

Kaprizov (15) - X - Rantanen (13)
Boldy - Eriksson Ek - X
Foligno - X - Hartman
Trenin - Gaudreau - X
X

Middleton - Faber
X - Spurgeon
Brodin - X
X

Gustavsson
Wallstedt

Cap hit = $87.9M

2 of the forward X's will be Yurov and Ohgren on ELCs. 1 of the defenseman X's will be Buium on an ELC. Another defenseman X will be Jiricek on his 2nd contract (whatever that is). Another forward X could be Khusnuts at a pretty low amount. So add those and it's ~$90.6M cap hit + Jiricek and Khus.

I think prospectively that year is slated for a $114M cap ceiling.

Don’t mind it.

Yurov would be playing with a ton of talent. Stramel probably in a bottom 6 role by then. Could perhaps jettison a few of those contracts by then as well.
