Post-Game Talk: Tough Decisions- LA Kings Off-Season

How is Kotkanemi only 25 still. Guy has been disappointment but can play center. Wonder if Carolina would do him for moore.

I hope LA pushes for Kent Johnson if his rumor trade request was true.
Mavrik Borque might get traded given Robertson's ask. Mavrik is an RFA, righty put up about 40 points last year. Good shot & lurks around net for rebounds. Listed as a C/W, but looks like he's mostly on wing for Dallas.

Okay so I just listened to the most recent Mayor's Minutes from the freaking Mayor, Johnny Hoven.... And I know people have their opinions about Hoven but he does typically have some inside information on the team's direction. Here are some points I thought were particularly interesting:
  • Laviolette
    • Talks about the hire and admits how Laviolette's style doesn't fit the Kings at all
    • Talks a lot about how Holland will need to make changes to the Kings roster to help them adhere to Laviolette's more offensive style of hockey
    • I'm liking the Laviolette hire a bit more.... Sounds like he's going to force the Kings to play a more offensive style/system while also being a bit of a hard ass who forces guys to play their hearts out... Guess we'll see how it goes but I'm at least interested for now
  • Doughty
    • Basically, it seems like the Kings have to make a decision on Doughty in the next couple weeks - Sounds like there are essentially two possible directions
      • Option 1: they offer Doughty an extension & likely make him the captain (and Doughty likely plays out the rest of his career in LA)
      • Option 2: they aren't able to agree on an extension and/or don't want to re-sign him and/or don't want to make him captain and they trade him
    • So it seems we're coming to a crossroads on Doughty, will be interesting to see which path the Kings choose
  • Defense
    • Hoven mentioned the Kings will need to replace two defensemen this offseason - in part to add more puck moving / scoring ability in general and in part to adhere to Laviolette's style
    • This is SUPER good news IMO
    • Swapping out 2 of the Kings current defensemen for upgrades (guys who can actually skate & make a breakout pass) would be HUGE for this team
  • Goalies
    • Has been discussed already on these forums, but it sounds like there's a very real possibility that they do trade one of Kuemper / Forsberg (likely Kuemper for money reasons)
    • I like this too... Give Portillo a shot and spend the cap savings elsewhere
I'm not buying it quite yet - But it sounds like a lot of changes are coming. Guess we'll see how the next month or two goes

He kicked a player on the bench despite knowing that the player in question had been a victim of horrendous physical abuse.

While giving preferential treatment to the golden boy players on the roster.

Crawford was a terrible coach, allegedly a terrible person and supported a totally different kind of country club bullshit.
No arguing or disputing any of this but are you able to elaborate on the last part a little more? In what ways was it a "different kind" of country club?

There's a story in Patrick O'Sullivan's book about he and another young high profile center at the time both going out past curfew and when they got to practice the next morning O'Sullivan was bag skated and the other player was not.

So all the Kings need to do are trade 4+ members of the current roster making a good amount of money for better players who make less and then they'll be all set. Seems easy enough

I guess I can share a couple more quick stories from my KingsVision days. In the lead-up to the 2011 NHL Awards, Brown and Logan Couture had to ride together. I just remember some footage that didn’t make the final cut of the video where Brown was asked how Terry Murray was as a coach and Brown generally spoke highly of Murray and talked about how Murray was open to having dialogue with his players. Then he briefly brings up his last coach (Crawford) who would just scream at everyone.

Also during that season, I remember feeling uncomfortable as I was holding the camera while Crawford was being interviewed after the Kings had just beaten the Stars due to a call that didn’t go the Stars way. I legit didn’t know if Crawford was going to hit one of us.

I wonder what Deano must have thought when he realized what kind of coach he’d hired.

How in the hell have I gone all these years without knowing he wrote a book.

It’s ordered now. I’m gonna have to burn through that as soon as it arrives.

Watch us end up with a defensemen that Peter Laviolette has coached in the past - someone like John Carlson, Jacob Trouba, Dante Fabbro, etc.
