Dallas Eakins leading the polls, hmm, I would venture to say that 50 of the 80 have zero clue who the guy is, or even the game he teaches. Not that it's a bad thing, just find it amusing. ... I voted for "other", hoping the Red Wings or Hawks would let us talk to Babcock or Quenville. Really love Quenville, liken him to being the Phil Jackson of hockey. ..

We don't know that yet....We have no idea how Eakins would react to being an NHL coach.

That's why we are basing his resume on ya know, what he's done up until now.

You can be a "players coach" and still has have demand and standards...

Imagine that? You mean everything doesn't have to be one extreme or the other ????

'Torts was too much of a control freak ! ' so.......

'Let's hire Vigneault ! He's a players coach, look how HE got the Sedins to perform !'

:shakehead

Quenville PJ of hockey? What?

Starting the Pierre Fan Club if he is hired and taking on a Kel Varnsen like conviction in support of his decisions. Just so noone is surprised.

Despite your awkward statement including an odd Seinfeld reference, you can't seriously be talking about Pierre McGuire as being the new coach, right?

As far as I'm concerned, this is either example a of today's generation of grammatically incorrect students and facepalm theories or just simply not english.

Sorry, this is just so confusing.

What incentive would Detroit or Chicago possibly have to let go of either one?

I didn't have any idea of who he is, but reading up on him, he's among my top choices.

From Brooks:

The next coach will be a player's coach for sure. I really hope we don't return to the days of zero accountability...

This is irrational fear. why does parting ways with a personality like Tortorella mean we're hiring Gandhi as head coach?

There needs to be balance. A good coach in any field uses various techniques to motivate and challenge his charges.

a good coach doesn't throw his players under the bus in the media... pretty good indication that he treated them like $hi#!

oh wait, i forgot, they were whiners...

I know who Eakins is. I'll readily admit I have zero clue about what type of style/system he employs. I'd say thats probably true for 90% of the board.

But hey, they'll wait to roast him at least until he gets here.

If either of them considered coaching the NYR's as their "dream" job, usually the organization listens. As for the organization's incentives, zero.. Just expressing my "other" hope from the poll..

all of your posts drip of sour milk. it's very immature and childish. You're weighing down the discussion.

I concur. We get it, we're gonna **** on whoever the new coach is. Let's go back to actually discussing who it should be

What has Eakins done up until now? You said

He doesn't play favorites or give preferential treatment based on salary or reputation.

What are you basing that statement on? From what I've read Eakins is a players coach. I think a first time NHL coach that is a players coach could be a bad fit. Why? Because it's very likely the first time coach hasn't learned the boundaries of being a coach yet. This isn't a market where you can learn on the fly. Not with a roster that can still be a contender. IF this was a younger rebuilding team I'd be all for trying someone like Eakins.

The Players decided they needed a new coach...

10:22AM: Darren Dreger said on TSN Radio yesterday that one person inside the Rangers organization said that Tortorella lost the team in February and that they knew he wasn’t going to be back.

Dreger also said that he understood the situation to be that Tortorella was safe.

10AM: According to Larry Brooks in the NY Post, Glen Sather had no intention of firing John Tortorella after the Rangers season ended.

That changed when “a critical mass†of players told Glen Sather that they felt Tortorella’s overbearing personality and coaching style was standing in the way of progress.

Brooks says that Henrik Lundqvist’s comments on Monday were the tipping point and that he was bothered by how the dynamic between Tortorella and the players was starting to fade.

Some other things that Brooks notes:

It wasn’t the on-ice style of play that cost Tortorella his job, it was that he was taking a harsher approach with the players in the locker room
The players were afraid to make mistakes on the ice, fearing of what the coach would say/do if they did.
Tortorella saying, after a loss in Buffalo, that he was disgusted with his top players was not something that was well received in the locker room:
“I couldn’t be more disgusted or disappointed with how our top guys played, the way we handled ourselves. That team was ripe to be beat and we simply did not play the way we are supposed to play. I don’t know what to tell you.â€â€œWe sucked and we sucked at a time where you can’t suck. We need to get it straightened out.â€
In the NY Daily News, Pat Leonard writes that “multiple players†including some “top guys†went to Sather to complain about Tortorella and ask for him to be removed.

Hire Scarface...

A guy who has never coached an NHL team before should not break the ice at MSG. That just sounds like a disaster in the making.

Ha, spare me with that BS. You know who was weighing down the discussion? You and the rest of the crew that was whining about firing the coach while an actual season was going on. How wonderful it must be to have these discussions about what coach will next step into Sather's firing squad.
