It would have been nice if our goal scoring 5v5 didn't collapse. I'm not sure how much to contribute our defensive improvement to the system, or players(Tanev, OEL), or goalie. Are you talking from the perspective of winning? If so, you need to look at the standings.
The Rangers have been a good regular season team, and an average team in the playoffs due to excellent goaltending.
Are you talking from the perspective of cookies or a fantasy league perspective?
Good goaltending and a good pk (which we have) is a big change.
Overall we are experimenting with systems, 3rd and 4th line combos, defensive pairings, showcasing players (Minton, Robertson, Timmins, and Grebenkin), an undisclosed Matthews injury, a slow start from Tavares due to sickness, and weeks/months of players injured all while holding the top spot in the Atlantic, and 6th overall in the NHL.
So what specifically are you talking about? Toronto might miss the President's Trophy?
The point is even if we're 1st on the league, this goal scoring downwards in the playoffs has now infected the regular season.
Is it sustainable? I don't think so. There's a point to evaluating teams and performance beyond the box score. The eye test tells me this is not acceptable with this level of talent to be this reliant on the goalie.
