If the Leafs score a few goals here and win the game, and Matthews plays a part in those goals, does it forgive 45 minutes of lackadaisical play? That is what you get with these kinds of players. Ovechkin looks disinterested for about 58 minutes of a game, and for the other two minutes he is the best player in the world. That is the trade-off you have to accept with exceptional talent. Sometimes it only needs to show up in brief moments.

McDavid, MacKinnon, Pasternak, Crosby, Point,etc. don't play like that. Ovechkin might've when he was younger but he developed into more of a complete, physical player which is part of the reason they eventually won a cup.
