My guess is that Berube becomes just another corporate coach. Every Leaf coach gets in line eventually and few have the stones to push back.

If they lose, Berube needs to give a more stern message to the media, something that Torts might do. Otherwise he just looks like another Yes Man who is held hostage by the team

Matthews game looks replacement level right now. I've never seen someone with so much talent struggle game to game with consistent efforts.

If the Leafs score a few goals here and win the game, and Matthews plays a part in those goals, does it forgive 45 minutes of lackadaisical play? That is what you get with these kinds of players. Ovechkin looks disinterested for about 58 minutes of a game, and for the other two minutes he is the best player in the world. That is the trade-off you have to accept with exceptional talent. Sometimes it only needs to show up in brief moments.

This is the mentality that makes Matthews ineffective in the playoffs over almost a decade long career. So if he can’t buy into the program and relies on his one strike game changing ability, we might come to the conclusion that we can’t actually build a winner around him.

The program and buy in is stronger without him in short samples because everyone gets on the same page. He’s not on that page right now.
