The dirty secret in all of this is that Marner is a better player than Matthews.

The problem right now is Auston Matthews has the goal scorers curse, which is when the quality of their play is linked to the feeling of scoring goals. When they don’t score, they’re not into it. And they’re not into it because they know they could flip a switch and change the game at any moment. But they really go when they’re scoring. That’s not really what you want in your alpha player. The work ethic looks bad and it’s not the right kind of leadership.

Marner has been a machine the past month and a half. He’s just a constant engine.
