Honestly I don’t really remember the nature of what happened to him that game but his problems look identical to the last time he was out with mysterious injuries and couldn’t shoot for half a season. It’s the only injury that would completely explain how sloppy he looks in almost every situation that isn’t firing a shot that’s all wrists.

I’m not trying to make excuses because if it really is a chronic back injury we’ve probably seen his best years already and he’ll either be out of the league or a limited PP specialist by the end of his current deal. It’s the type of issue that goes from “what’s wrong with him” to “we just hope he can have an ok quality of life after hockey” really quick.

He could be banged up or it might be chronic we’ll never know. But you see flashes and it doesn’t look like there’s anything wrong at all. To me it looks more like a mental sharpness issue and then conditioning.
