God, I hate being a Leafs fan sometimes.

We just locked ourselves into an 8-year cycle of path dependency and pure sunk-cost fallacy.

We’re pulling a Pittsburgh Penguins: doubling down on an aging core and selling our future to desperately chase a first-round exit. At least Pittsburgh actually won three Cups first to justify the downfall and going down with the Crosby/Malkin ship.

We should have traded Matthews and Nylander this offseason, embraced the rebuild, and drafted McKenna. Instead, we’re going to overpay veterans, delay the inevitable, and end up at square one in four years with zero trade value left.

Yeah it sucks to rebuild without our own 1st rounders for the next two seasons but allowing that to make us pot-committed and trying in vain to turn this roster into a cup winner ****s us for like a decade or more when it inevitably fails.
Wow

I applause your courage for saying something that most leafs fans don’t want to admit

Too late, Leafs fans don’t care what the eyes of his longtime team/organization saw and have anointed him the next Bobby Orr. Way to be a “hater”.
Nobody is saying he's the next "bobby orr" only that he ISN'T a 4-7 slot defenseman. He's a top pairing defenseman. He was used as a top pairing defenseman and he excelled in that role.

I was waiting for the inevitable..."he's washed" narrative to pop up in this thread as it inevitably does with regards to anything Leaf related. And I was not disappointed.

If they weren't going to blow it up, this is the way to go. Not sure it'll work out for them, but there's very little else to use the extra cap money on in the market... and the D desperately needed to change if Toronto's going to compete this year.

I still think they have too many holes with not enough assets to fill them, but I don't blame the new front office for going for it. A full tear down rebuild would not go over well with much of the fan base.

Nobody is projecting Stanley to get 6/7M. Most projections have him around 3M-4M (still too much).
you do know the cap is projected to increase substantially these next few years ya? It's going to throw off the norm of what you think players should get.

By 2028 it's projected to be 113.5.

I think the word is out and most players know this.

About as ridiculous as a 6 year deal for Brad Marchand or a 7 year deal for Aaron Ekblad. In other words, all of these contracts are ridiculous. The only contracts that have a chance to be "good" anymore are long term deals for younger guys. That's just the way it is.

One of those guys had a ten year track record and the other like 15. Apples to oranges.

No. Trading Nylander and Matthews this offseason, when both have full NMCs, and one just had a horrendous season, when we also don't have our 1sts in either 2027 or 2028 would end up being the worst idea that any professional team in any sport ever had or will have.

Yea no shit the cap is going up. It's not going up to 300M like some people act around here every time we see an overpay. Bad contracts will still be bad contracts.

Stanley is a bottom pair guy who has been awful. He's projected around 4Mish from most models. That's still gonna be an awful deal.

So many parallels to 2016 NBA free agency. Cap explodes with a bad FA pool. Fans justify it with "well the cap is going up" and nearly all the deals aged terribly & cost GMs their jobs.

Except you are totally wrong. He played major minutes due to injuries to Hedman, McDonagh, etc. At one point they were rolling out 4 AHL defensemen. So if being one of 2 NhL defenseman makes you a top 2 defenseman, than I guess he’s a top 2 defenseman. He would have been a 5-6 on the Lightning next year.

I’m thrilled he got a huge contract. I’m even happier that Toronto was the one to pay him.
Didn't he get 26 mins a night in the playoffs when everyone other than Hedman was back?

How's that work?

If he was going to be your #5 or 6 next year, which 4 or 5 were going to play ahead of him?

I think deep down every smart leafs fan has that fear somewhere
Would you say that's more or less fear than ending a 50 point season with the 3rd overall pick
I’m hearing he’ll be wearing David Clarkson’s old number 71 with the Leafs.
The rumour is he'll be wearing 0 in honour of Vancouver's success as a franchise
