Well, it's likely the Leafs will be doing most of their retooling via trade rather than free agency. They've already gotten two defencemen this way this week alone

Effectively this will be the net result.

Leafs will swap out Morgan Rielly, for Darren Raddysh, for an additional $1 mil cap hit. The cost on Raddysh of a 5th, will be offset by a higher return for Rielly, though I don't really expect it to be an incredible return, but somewhere in the 2nd round pick range...

Still, Leafs end up with around the same offensive production, better defensive player, more in demand handedness, and gain assets in doing so.

On it's own, this is a win for the Leafs.

Seriously though, if they can get a few years of Raddysh with a similar level of play he provided this past season it will be decent.

8 years for a 31 year old is tough but for the AAV isn’t horrible.

Don't think the signing is necessarily bad. I think it's the direction the teams as chosen to go in.
Don't think they can come out of the Atlantic with the core they have... they'll need a lot more than Raddysh. Just see this move has something to keep them afloat. Prevents them from bottoming out, but doesn't make them a true contender either.

Nurse got 9.25M with a 41 point career high on a much lower cap - so really not that insane to pay a guy 8.5M who had 70 in 73 games.

There is certainly redundancy on the blueline; I don't think you give up Joseph Woll to get a player (Andrae) who isn't at the very least a planned player for your opening night top 6.

Realistically, you're looking at:

McCabe-Raddysh
Rielly/OEL-Carlo
Andrae-Tanev

One would assume that they'll get more than a 5th round pick for either Rielly or OEL. If you can find a hockey trade, either should return a top 6 forward.
