He was only going to Toronto. This is known. Stop trumpeting false narrative. He was gotten for a 5th so that he could get the 8th year and keep the cap hit lower. There is no other reason and no other team he was signing with.
If he was only going to Toronto this is a stupid contract to give him. He is going to be 31 this year the age average players start to decline. He has a small sample size and is about to get paid until he is 39. They better hope last year wasn’t a fluke.
Isn’t he slower than average already? The more I think about it the worse this signing feels

Yes...he got slower while having his career 70 point year. Imagine how many points he would have had if he wasnt old and broken down....do you people ever read what you write? You want to disparage the Leafs so badly you will say anything, no matter how silly.

lol, no one is going to care when he’s even 35 and 3rd pair dmen are making this same amount. Why are you so obsessed with an 8.5 per deal? He’s literally 32nd in percentage of cap. Worry about something else because this ain’t it.

What pressure? Ok yeah you're right, playing hockey in Tampa Bay on a league minimum contract is EXACTLY the same as being brought into the biggest hockey market in the world and being awarded a contract that makes you one of the highest paid players at your position after one good season.

Ridiculous comment

He's the Leaf's 1D and is now 18th with regards to defensemen in the NHL.

I dunno. He didn't exactly get 1D payment. Just term. Might have something to do with the fact that he's 30.

When you take into account the cap % when he signed, he is tied for 34th with Carlson, Hronek, Andersson, and Toews.

He is getting paid like a high-end 2D or low-end 1D, which is what he probably is.

factoring cost, age and production, from this list I only take 7 players over Raddysh, so, not too shabby.
Luke Hughes is not one of my 7 for example, though Seider is.

I'm going to suggest that it's probably likely that none of the seven on your list were available this summer?

There’s 5 on there for me and 2 additional players that are close to what I expect from Raddysh moving forwards .
Dahlin, Bouchard, Werenski, Fox, McAvoy, Makar and Seider should be locks on anyone's list. Which one of those 7 don't fall into your 5?

After that, Chychrun's more proven over multiple seasons, Dobson's younger with room to grow, and Hughes has more potential. Not sure I'd take Raddysh over either of these three.

The only "old" guys who may decline/have declined below Raddysh are Karlsson, Doughty, and Josi. Due to age, I'd lean toward Raddysh over these guys.

Seth Jones depends on whether you're an analytics or eye test guy.

If you truly want to know what Tampa fans think of Raddysh just go check out some of our GDT's or threads about Raddysh. BALD EAGLE!!!! We absolutely loved the guy until it was clear that he wasn't resigning...then some of the fans turned on him and crapped all over him. Pathetic. WDWHA crap. If Kuch doesnt resign he'll be washed and too old and blah blah blah and somehow JBB will be a genius for not resigning the reigning Hart trophy winner.

This makes sense, because now that Bob is out of Florida he is also washed and too old

"Chychrun is more proven, clearly, you take the proven asset."

"These young guys are not as good, but they might be, you always take the unproven asset with potential."

Makes sense.

There are ten guys on that list that you Raddysh is better than? (Factoring cost, age and production?)

Are two of those players that raddysh is better than named Benoit and Carlo?

If so, the leafs defense got better

We don’t need to compare the raddysh signing to anyone but those two at the end of the day

From the list provided I’d have Raddysh above

Nurse
Hughes (Luke ) -at least for the next couple/be interesting to see if he pans out
Doughyty
Hamilton
Pie - is he playing next year ? What does the player look like now ?
Jones

Karlsson-possibly due to age but was really really good last season so not sure how quick the drop will be

Could be similar / better than Dobson , McAvoy , Josi , Chych depending on their health / age / ability to stay in the lineup .

lots of these would be debatable but beyond the elite guys he could belong in this tier

We don't need to compare Raddysh to anyone but Carlo because that is the replacement.

As long as Andrea doesn't handle the puck like It's a bomb he will more than replace Benoit

He will not be 31 this year. He is a late bloomer. Wouldn’t expect the typical career progression/regression at this point. I’m sure we can agree that Leafs needed to improve their D core, who would you have signed or traded for instead ?

It does make sense if you compare within context.

Chychrun is a similar age to Raddysh and at that age neither are likely to have more upside than they've shown.. So when comparing those types, you look at proven since both are essentially what they'll ever be.

Dobson/Hughes are younger than Raddysh and still have room to grow. So you factor in any sort of potential growth they still have in their games to compare them.

Not everything is black and white. You need to look at nuance if the age of the various players are being compared and not just "lol you change your criteria for different players".

Fair enough. And I don't necessarily disagree with your reasoning.

Also, appreciate the fact you actually respond with points of your own and not just random snark.

Context is important... like the context that Dobson had a one-off season many years ago and has not been able to recreate it, and is going to be 27 this upcoming season, so not likely to get much better.

Also, bringing context into the Raddysh conversation about him only getting the opportunity to break out because of Hedman being injured might be important when discussing "more proven", which Chychrun barely is. Chychrun also has more of a track record of not rising to the occasion when tasked to do so.

Hughes, who knows, but he needs to improve a lot, but he is only 23 next season, so he may.

Fair enough. And I don't necessarily disagree with your reasoning.

Disagreeing and pointing out flawed thinking is not snark.

Dobson's hovered around 45-50 points for the bulk of his prime (5 straight seasons now). He had that one outlier of 70 points, but otherwise has shown he's capable of being around a 50 point defenseman. And at 26 years old, that's generally still an age where defensemen improve, especially in the defensive end as they gain more experience.

How is Chychrun not more proven than Raddysh? Chychrun's got two seasons of 20 or more goals, a third season where he had 18 goals in 56 games, and even prior to last year has multiple seasons of pacing for 40+ points. In comparison, Raddysh has one 20 goal season and only twice paced for 40+ points. As for "not rising to the occasion", Raddysh had 1 goal and 2 points in the 7 game loss to Montreal. Isn't that the definition of "regular season player who didn't produce when it mattered"?

Again, if you think Raddysh is better than either of those guys, go for it. I'm not even arguing there's a massive gap nor would I be surprised if that ends up being the case. But at the same time, I don't know why you're acting like it's so "flawed" to think that those two are ahead of Raddysh *at this point in time* and is some sort of incredibly daft take.

Disagreeing and pointing out flawed thinking is not snark.
Quoting my different criteria depending on the age/experience of the player being compared and then just writing "makes sense" in a sarcastic way is very much snark. If you'd simply posted your three paragraphs above in the first post it would have been "disagreeing and pointing out flawed thinking".

I think people are really sleeping on Reilly. With a new uptempo system that activates the defence, he is going to be right in his wheelhouse as a #4 that isn’t expected to carry a huge defensive load. Addition by subtraction of Berube and his moron coaching to a team not built to play that type of game.
