On the plus side his D zone faceoffs are quite good and he is a regular pk center. But the offense is beyond brutal as significantly worse pp60 than Gauthier (250th among centers since 2017) so I would hope he doesn't get close to the ES ice time with the Leafs that he got with the Hawks. As long as he is anchored on the 4th line and pk he might be a solid add but the money is kind of high for a player that seems to barely have NHL offensive skills. Chicago has been a bottom 10 team for his time there so he may show something different as a Leaf. A lot will depend on how Keefe chooses to use him.

Wait, how can that stat be right?
30 teams, 4 centres? Must be lotsa small samples.

Yes there is a ton of small stats. I just used NHL.com players stats and selected pp60 for centers. I took the 4 year sample because his last season was so poor. If you just search 20-21 he is 229th and you can toss a little over half out because of few games played. There are a couple dozen guys below him who played in more than 20 games though.

The Goat was at 1.41 since 2017 and Kampf at 1.14 but he wasn't signed for his offense. Clearly there must be some other metrics where he stood out because you don't give a 2 year deal to someone who can only deliver 1 goal. Obviously they are hoping he will recreate his 1.39 pp60 breakout season of 2018-19 and offer some fantastic pk skills.

A younger Riley Nash was a dang good defensive 3C.

Riley Nash couldn't skate coming back from his injury. He didn't play a regular season game for the Leafs and then he was expected to ramp up play speed to playoff levels.

I'm starting to like this signing a lot more with the caveat that Keefe is able to use him in a similar role as what Tampa had with their 3rd shutdown line. Can Mikheyev - Kampf & some sort of combination of Kase/Bunting/Simmons/Anderson be a discount brand shutdown line? This will allow the Leafs top 2 lines to feast on the other teams 3rd liners. Despite the current narrative around Marner & Matthews, they are still elite talent. They need that supporting cast to give them more opportunities, but they also need to have Keefe put them in the spot to succeed.

So yeah, Kampf becomes an important piece in helping shut down so Matthews doesn't have to do it.

so people want to kick Engvall to the curb for his lack of production but like Kampf who's much worse offensively ?

but i guess since it's the off season we can believe this is another stroke of genius by mgmt

I'd like to compare him to Danault... the stone handed, elite shutdown C
Danault was used as MTL's #1 C with Lekhonin and Gallagher as his usual wingers
Suzuki should have been, but, he got the early career Matthew's 2nd line matchups exclusively

Kampf is a shutdown C, but, we'll be using him (more than likely) as our #3C and if he gets any points we are in a better situation, and he's going to play this role we have needed for a while on the cheap.

if he doesnt get 10 goals or 20 points, but is a plus 20 will i be disappointed, not in the slightest, because, thats not his role, any points he gets is gravy
I just hope we dont waste him on the 4th line.

Kampf is a legit shut down center - with more exposure in Toronto, he’ll likely get Selke consideration.

Engvall is a replacement level winger.

Engvall is good at disrupting break outs and is good at forechecking...that is about the extent of his defensive resume. He is horrific in his own zone because he rarely knows who to cover. Saying that Kampf is the same thing is crazy.

This appears to be the Leafs plan of upgrading 4th line centres.

David Kämpf - C (Age 26 @$1.5 mil AAV) ........... 56 games 1 goal 11 assists 12 points
vs.
Pierre Engvall - C (Age 25 @$1.25 mil AAV )..... 42 games 7 goals 5 assists 12 points

I don't believe they like Engvall as a center so to them they have replaced a W with a C. One of the Hawks board Mods described him as "a low event player at both ends of the ice" which doesn't bode well for his wingers but as long as he doesn't get used to much there should be too much pain. They don't really have a bottom 6 guy they can line match to slow down another clubs offense do they? If he is that, then he is something that allows them do something they couldn't do last year.

A 4th line defense first checking shutdown centre is the way I view him..

However I don't see how this really works unless he isn't a 4th line player but rather a 3rd line and the Leafs are planning to create a checking shutdown line with him and Mikeyev and 3rd member to use against other teams top offensive players in a shutdown role. So when Leafs have last change and home ice advantage Leafs can let him go up against the Perfection line or Kucherov line or against Crosby etc.

Its almost as if Leafs view him as our version of Phillip Danault essentially because they saw what he did against Matthews and Marner in the playoffs.

They aren't really handcuffed to giving him 3rd line minutes though, he just takes some of the matchups away from the top 2 centers so you don't have Kerfoot or Engvall as your only options. If he is that good at defending he becomes someone who you can ramp his minutes up in against certain playoff lineups. They shoot the lights out playing pond hockey in the regular season so no need for him to get 14:00 TOI then. In the regular season just more minutes in key games and some 3rd period matchups so his lack of scoring doesn't create a black hole in your offense every night. Nobody for him to check on this years Habs but if they want to avoid 3rd period meltdowns against the Bolts or Bruins next season maybe that's his spot to shine. If he is really that good at defending.

Must be new shinny toy effect

We were arms and about for Engvall for not adding more sandpaper and scoring.. who has average of 7 goals last two years in 40+ games played

We ran Vesey out of town who had 5 goals in 30 games and Boyd in 20 games has 3 goals

But we are excited to have a 6'2 center forward who scored 1 goal last year in 56 games?

Last I checked he wasn't physical, doesn't have offensive upside... Just kills penalties and maybe known has a defensive centerman.

Last 2 playoff series we lost, we didn't lose to a single forward that owned us that we needed to go out there get a defensive center. We lost to better goalies and our forwards folding like cheap chairs. =

Is he going to play 25 mins if we play Oilers to mark McDavid or Kucharov?

Must be a tough off season

If Kampf regularly gets shutdown assignments against the opposition's top centres, that should benefit Matthews and Tavares in terms of their matchups as well.

Other teams would love for you to play Kampf 16-20 mins a game.
A) Their D will get much needed break and get rest
B) even their forwards will won't have to worry about any counter attack, so they can play with more confidence

You want other teams best lines to play against Matthews and Tavares. That will keep them at bay, not wanting to trade chances
Kampf is a shut down center, he's not exactly Bergeron or Esa Tikannen

but, if he scored on half of the chanced he had he'd have had 10 more goals. ...so, thats why he was run out.
Vesey is also a winger, so, its not comparable in value
