lol it was always Matthews will get 11.5-12M but we all thought it would at least be on a 7-8 year deal. You are paying a premium and eating no UFA years. lol

I knew it was never going to be less then 11 million, even though others tried to say that for a 5 year contract it would have a low cap hit. Definitely not a discount at all, but having your best player signed is a good thing. For that price, I would have pushed harder and paid a bit more for 8 years.

A lot of money for a deal that brings him right to unrestricted free agency and for a player who currently isn’t even the best player on his team. Let alone 2nd best player in the world.

BUT it’s good for the leafs to get the deal done. Even if it is a mild overpay.

He's arguably the 3rd or maybe even 4th best player on the Leafs. Marner and Tavares are 1 and 2 undisputed and then Matthews, Andersen and Rielly are all up for debate and can be ranked anywhere from 3-5
