That's one way to look at it.
Another would be that he improved a team that finished top ten in the league last year. Did any of the nine teams that finished ahead of the Leafs also improve? As much as the Leafs? Anyone?
The Leafs projected opening night line up this year has the following changes from last year on opening night.
OUT --> IN
Bertuzzi --> McMann
Minten --> Paccioretty
Gregor --> Holmberg
Reaves --> Dewar
Brodie --> Tanev
Klingberg --> OEL
Giordano --> Benoit or Hakanpaa
Samsonov --> Stolarz
Keefe --> Berube
Any other top teams have this good of an off-season?
You pretend you are basing the comparison off the opening night roster, but then use the end of season results. No one cares about the 4 games that Minten played last season.
Simon Benoit who played 64 regular season games and all 7 playoff games for the Leafs is replacing Giordano who played 46 regular season games and 0 playoff games?
McMann played 56 games for the Leafs last season and scored 15 goals. You don't have anyone replacing him, so is he filling in for Bertuzzi's production last season AND his own? 136 games and 36 goals?
Reaves, who is still on the team, is being replaced by Dewar, who was already on the team? They both played in at least 5 playoff games to end the year, so I'm not sure if one is really replacing the other.
New addition Pontus Holmberg, who is at 98 games played with the Leafs, will be a fun fresh new face to watch.
