Nice move for Matthews. Got his pay day and will have a chance to cash in as UFA in a few years, while he's still in his prime.

Lol you were one of the guys that spent most of his last contact saying he was going to leave as soon as it ended.
I’m guessing you will be equally as wrong this time.
don’t worry about it…. I’m done with leaf fans they arnt so bad

Montreal Canadian fans are the real issue now

How does Matthews become the highest paid player in the league and NOT sign for 8 years? Toronto is a joke.
Dubas created a bit of a mess with the original Matthews/Marner negotiations and unfortunately there's no way to really fix it with this core. Like Matthews deserved a bit of a raise, not this much, but he deserved a raise, so what exactly are the Leafs supposed to do? Play hardball and he leaves, trade him and you're worse off, or give him a bit more than he should get and get chirped for a mess you didn't create.

Tavares is a PPG center who still has 3 years left on his deal.

Not signing Matthews for more term at that money is a far bigger screwup than signing Tavares for 8 years.
he is signed for his prime... why is everyone wanting to keep paying past his prime?

I wanted 5 years, and no more than 6, this deal is fine.

Honestly tho this may be a blessing in disguise for TO only signing him to a 4 year deal.... 13.25 when he's in his 30s could be brutal

If you combine this deal with the last, the Leafs signed Matthews for 9 years for under the same AAV McDavid got in a much lower cap - but you'd never know that.
Okay but how is that relevant? You can make up whatever reason to convince yourself but the truth is that he has the highest cap in the league next year. Who cares about the average, he has the HIGHEST cap despite not performing at that level

That’s a tale as old of time—forcing your way off a team or leaving as a UFA without telling the team in time so they can trade you.

But this! Staying with a team but just wrecking them with unfair and unprecedented deals is new. This isn’t an overpayment or bad contract. It’s just ridiculously player friendly. Not only is it the highest AAV in the league, but by a lot. And it is a short term.

Let me ask you this.

If Matthews signed a 9 year - 12.355M deal under a higher cap after his ELC - would you have been happier?

I'll drive him to the airport if that is the case. By that point we got Matthews through his prime. Arizona can overpay him to be one of the worst boat anchors in the league.

Leafs are in no way losers here. They did what they could, can't force a player to play ball. They drafted a superstar and got a superstar to 31. And if he doesn't win us a cup in the next 5 seasons Leaf fans will be done with him anyways
Yep. Matthews whole prime a Leaf. Genius term

They bought up all his prime years and give themselves another year or two on the window of Cup contention.

I still think it's selfish of him to do 3 or 4 years here but I get some value the money a lot.

I didn't think he'd sign 8 years to remain a Leaf forever so to say but good on him, lots of people thought he would leave, myself included.
He held true to his word, his rich rich word.

So he's incredibly greedy but makes a lower AAV than McDavid over a longer term, under a higher cap. McDavid also signed after 2 seasons.

"This is the right money"

Matthews is not the best player in hockey, yet he just got paid the most of any player in hockey while also getting short term that he wanted. Matthews absolutely destroyed the Leafs with this contract.

Are you a new fan? Do you understand how the cap works?

This is bad in so many ways. He instantly becomes the highest paid player in the NHL and signs for only 4 years? That's not how you help your team be more competitive and he doesn't seem to care one bit.

He deserves to get traded to Winnipeg in a year or two

Yeah, it's bad term now, but unless he's the second coming of Martin St. Louis, you're only paying him for his remaining peak years. Resign him after for less, or let him walk to a foolish team.

It’s not about me being happy. It’s about me watching sports for a long time and I dont recall a team’s star player ever doing something comparable. Especially not in hockey.

It’s just interesting, and slightly humorous as a non-Toronto fan (I’m a Sabres fan, there’s just as much funny stuff about my team, if not more).

Let me ask you, are you happy your best player just demanded and got a million more than every other star contract…and wouldnt go more than four years unlike literally every other top contract
