He took some big steps this year. Unfortunately we have a bunch of stat watchers who don’t watch the games, and certainly haven’t a clue what playing D in hockey consists of. They’d think Larry Robinson was horrible.

TL was getting $3 million. Maybe 3 years is a year too much but they’re betting on him continuing to get better with more experience and maturity. As that’s what usually happens at his age now. Could be a steal season 2 and 3.

If he’s bad, they’ll address it. People need to be honest about him though. I’ve ripped him as much as anyone. He’s much better than he was 2 years ago though.

It was a 2 year deal, not 3.

3 mill is the 2 mill of yesteryear, get used to it.
Yesteryear is 2010? For a 50% cap increase (3:2) youd have to go that far back. It hasn't gone up nearly enough for a 2 to become a 3 within the last decade.

2 million signed in 2017 is 2.34 million now. Things haven't changed enough to justify a guy that didn't crack the lineup for much of the season to be getting 3 million. 500k to 750k overpaid. Doesn't matter if it's the only one but this is a team with the most cap used up on 4 guys in the league and they all play forward, you need to get some value deals.

overpaid. But he just got paid 2.4 million today in a bonus. I wonder if he stays?

Odd that he got that big of pay bonus and got paid too much.

Wonder if he is moved

If he can solidify himself as a reliable 2nd pairing guy, this is a great deal. If the Leafs use him as a 3rd pairing guy, then it is just ok as a run back. He is never going to be the ideal #1 pairing guy, nor does he fit the role as a premere shut down D man. He is not an offensive catalyst either. 2 years is about right for a vaniila player.

This to me signaled they were out any other big name D men aside from getting Tanev.

Liljegren is a good defender that is still improving. A typical late bloomer who doesn’t get any pp time. Good deal that gives the leafs time to see if he can become a legit top 4 guy.

$3m/year to be a scratch and the worst shot share on the defense group. Bravo!

$3M AAV is pretty much going to be the going rate for bottom-pair defensemen with an increasing cap.
You are bad at math

Wow, none of this stopped him from being a scratch. Garbage stats giving garbage conclusions.

You’re the one who brought up underlying stats than proceed to call them garbage when they don’t support your narrative lmao

Yeah scratched for one game then immediately re-inserted, from a coach who was subsequently fired.

Being scratched not a narrative it’s a fact. Getting out shot is a big problem when you have Samsonov in net. You are the one creating a narrative a blaming the coach and finding irrelevant stats to make a story. Don’t use words you don’t understand.

I knew this is where the Leafs fan base was heading. Keefe is gone let’s blame him for everything. Just like they did with Kadri, Andersson, Babcock, etc. It’s always a guy on the way out that’s the sand in the vaseline. You would think by now Leafs fans need to realize it’s the players they have that are the problem not the guys who have left.

No one is blaming Keefe for everything. But maybe he’s not infallible so his choice to scratch Liljegren for one game doesn’t define Liljegrens season…

The narrative you are stumbling around is that shots matter, but scoring chances, expected goals and actual goals don’t because they all make Liljegren look pretty effective. It’s very strange.
