NYR: "Willing to shake things up"= "someone please take our aging players making 14m+ per year with term because we have to re-sign Shesterkin, Lindgren, and Miller."
Yeah, a third-pair defenceman with a cap hit of $8M is a problem. Trouba forcing his way out of Winnipeg is one of the best things to happen for the Jets. Got arguably a better player-- not even an argument this season, Pionk >>Trouba-- on cheaper contracts plus a 20th overall pick (who still has a chance if he ever manages to stay healthy).

This cap crunch has been coming for three years. They should have gotten in front of it earlier imo
They weren’t aggressive enough before the cap crunch but also the Buch/Trouba deals really killed them.

A dude like Rutherford would’ve gone all in at the TDL for a 3 year stretch if he was in their position, that’s the way to do it.

They really needed to trade Trouba with some retention this offseason when his NMC turned to a MNTC. I can understand not wanting to move Kreider and his yearly 30 goals, but with Panarin making 11m+ and with the Laf extension, you just can’t have that much money tied up in wingers. My guess is they thought they could trade him this offseason, but he’s declined/having a down year.

Still think going after rentals is seldom worth the cost, unless you are top 4 in the league at the deadline. I suppose if the stars. had aligned, the Lindholm trade might of carried us to the finals. But I hate giving up 1st round picks even if they are going to be late 20's. Oh well ... at least Brewski is not advancing ... yet. And like everyone else, glad Lindholm wanted more than we were willing to give. Would have liked Zadorov though, too bad he wanted an extra Mill.

To be fair, when the Rangers acquired him Trouba looked to be a young, all-situations, first pairing D. His last season in Winnipeg was his peak though and he regressed in NYR. He was an overpaid 3D( pandemic didn’t help), but now he is a very overpaid 4/5.

And yeah Winnipeg did great to get a young, NHL D with upside and a first. He’s only gotten better since the trade, unlike Trouba.

Yeah, what I liked about last year's acquisitions was there was a path to re sign one or both of them (I wanted zadorov back). Pure rentals, especially ones that cost a 1st are silly and rarely work out.

pick up trouba? but doesnt his wife work in the states as a doctor ? so she might not want to relocate? plus he has an ntc

trouba kind of sucks for what he's paid and his wife couldn't work here. at least if he goes to another us market she can practice after she finishes her residency in june

I don't want Marcus Pettersson. OK sure I'll be happy if Allvin acquires him, but I am done with the rentals. Lindholm and Zadorov turned out to be too expensive in the long run and left, but I just want to trade for a player who will be a longterm solution not just a rental. I would rather throw our first, Lekkerimaki and Hoglander + or whatever it takes, to get a guy like Owen Power "I know probably not doable" or something than continue to throw first rounders away for a rental. This defense is atrocious. Willander will be coming soon and he is a definite protected player, but at this point I would honestly consider making Lekkerimaki's name available and see if you can make a hockey trade.

Lekkerimaki for Jiricek? I don't know. It's something worth to consider.

Absolutely. Made it a point of trying to follow Marcus Pettersson in this game. Looked to me like a skinnier version of Tyler Myers. Some seriously blind giveaways in his own zone.

I suppose if Allvin has a chance to acquire him for a later round draft pick, then maybe you bring him in. But expending anything of value is pointless.

At this point it would be HIGHLY inadvisable to trade away their 1st round pick or one of their top prospects for a rental.

Lots of headwinds this year and it would be foolish to go all in, especially since things are shaping up for them to be closer to a mid round first than a late round first.

At this point, I suspect they'll buy him out in the off season. It saves them 4M next season and only adds 2M the following year. Pretty friendly buyout terms. Nobody's taking him off their hands with a very hefty sweetener

According to Donnie and Dhali, the Jackets have told a number of teams--including the Canucks--that they simply don't have the assets to acquire Jiricek.

The Jackets enquired about Wilander early on. But trading him is a total non-starter for Vancouver, as it should be. There's just no 'quick-fix' on the horizon for the Canucks blueline.

They're just going to have to tough it out, and hope something pops closer to the TDL.

Ya I'm not a fan of rentals but I do believe management was intending to extend Zadorov and Lindholm. But again simple DD should reveal what the player's intentions are and the asking price. With Zadorov he made no secret that he wanted out of Calgary because he wanted to sign an extension. I won't rehash this too much but Zadorov's ask before the playoffs was pretty much 100% what he was reportedly asking from Calgary and the Canucks were willing to give Zadorov what he was asking for at the end. With Lindholm that was a difficult signing to begin with. Lindholm reportedly rejected a 8x$9M offer from Calgary. Was it because he didn't want to sign in Calgary? At the end I'm not sure what managment was expecting. If Lindholm proves to be a great fit alongside Petey he ain't signing 7x$7M. Were we willing to offer more all along? Hoping he struggles?

I see M-Petey as a similar situation to Zadorov. This is a player management should know well. It shouldn't be difficult to find out whether M-Petey is willing to sign in Vancouver vs hitting free agency. And if he's willing to sign what he is seeking, what he will likely get as a UFA, and assessing with reasonable certainty the chances of getting a deal done.

If the Canucks are trading a significant asset like a 1st round pick for M-Petey then get the extension done. Give him a retroactive NMC if that's something he wants.
