Solid solid.

Extreme defensive usage and does well in it. His offense will most certainly go up with us over his current 30pt pace.

And physical.

So that's maybe the two best defensive forwards on a great defensive team that we've just added.

So this should shut up all you damn boomers now.

Finally, Dubas has enough grit to synch with the talent. Not a boomer but I will shut up now and watch some hockey.

So when you then deal your 1st round pick for an aging rental player to obtain those traits you refuse to draft, or higher costs than have been frown upon in he past, then how does one square that if the cost is the same or more?

Not sure that drafting for those traits even with a first rounder works that well either. Crouse and Ritchie come to mind as picks people wanted, that are truly bottom sixers that I prefer Foligno over.

This team ever get old in a hurry!

Time will tell about this deal, but I do like the Rittich deal.

Hopefully he plays about 35 games for the Leafs, that might make the 1st. fair.

Oh, and I'm joking about getting old ... other than Tavares with the piano on his back.

Guys, talk me off a cliff that this deal is OK given what BOS payed for Hall.

Buffalo wanted a 1st for Hall too but nobody would pay that, Dubas had to pay a 1st for Foligno because several other GM’s were offering 1st’s. Several GM’s were offering 1st’s because they’re more familiar with both these players than any fan is by a long shot, and deemed Foligno to have more value. Why they deemed Foligno to have more value? because regardless of the importance of the game or the quality of the team around them, Nick Foligno, much like Zach Hyman, always shows up to work.

Hall - in the best case scenario - has been mailing it in instead of trying to be the difference maker because he’s on the Sabres, that reeks of character issues. The other side of that coin is he is essentially now what the eye test says he is, which might not even be worth a 2nd round pick.

It’s a good trade, and with the draft being such a crapshoot this year our 2nd round pick as the same odds of hitting as the 1st.

I would say this trade was probably the worst value of the deadline so far.

There will be no cap space to sign Foligno due to flat cap and he loves Columbus so I think he goes back after this year.

Doesn't seem like a dubas trade to me, kind of seems like he bowed down to social pressure as he usually doesn't like very short term rentals.

Reported. Mirtle and Jonas Siegle talked about him as a potential Leafs targeted kna Leafs Report podcast back in mid March.

Said Leafs were interested but we're moving on believing he wanted to stay state side to avoid the quarantine procedures (which at the time we're still 14 days)
so just speculation passed on as fact as a way to deflect any criticism away from why we paid the same price for a lesser return

just an aside - there's a decent chance we may have just traded away the least valuable "1st round pick" in league history, at potentially #32 in a weak and unscoutable draft.

funny cuz the on ice team may have just got way younger if Foligno boots Thornton out of the lineup.

It wasn't speculation, they were discussing things they'd heard about the negotiation s. Also it happened a month ago..... there's no need to "deflect" anything.

Not to mention where did Palmeri end up? Not with any other Canadian team......

its funny that the only team getting heat for not trading a 2nd for Hall is the toronto maple leafs, when if he's the player people say, then every playoffs team could have both used him and beat that offer.

anyways, there's a reason why Boston needed to get him - not sure people realize how dire things are offensively in Boston this year - they are 27th in 5v5 gf/60, and 29th in 5v5 xgf/60. They are desperate for offense, and the only team that was willing to even give up a 2nd rounder for him.

Wouldn't late picks in this draft be worth more than late picks in normally scouted drafts? Way higher chance of good talent dropping later in the draft because of less scouting..

I really dont get that narrative for late picks. For a top 10 pick I would agree though

That's really my only concern with this trade, if we take out Engvall or Galchenyuk instead of Thornton I worry about team speed.

As long as Thornton is the one that comes out it's a big upgrade.

Conversely it also means your scouting staff haven't been able to see those players any more than other teams. So it's not as if there's a way to take advantage.ofnthose falling guys other than some stats analysis of earlier seasons

McKenzie explicitly stated the Leafs didn’t want Hall. Even then, Hall was going to carry a $4M cap hit for any acquiring team. That would have severely limited the possibility of other moves.
I figure he'd be a $2M add going through a second team for 75% total retention

Does Seattle get a first this year?

Taylor Hall ($4,000,000 retained - 50%) · $4,000,000 for a 2nd round pick
or
Nick Foligno ($2,750,000 retained - 50%) by CBJ & Nick Foligno ($1,375,000 retained - 50%) by SJ · $1,375,000 = $4,125,000 retention total for a 1st round pick.

Retention was essentially the same in both trades only Leafs spit theirs over 2 teams!!

Leafs paid 1st + 2 X 4ths and Boston paid 2nd rounder for the same retention amount.

Perhaps that's one way to look at it.

However, what you fail to realize is the league wide demand for Hall vs. Foligno. One can assume that other teams were in on Foligno and most likely willing to give up a 1st. We had no choice but to offer our 1st and perhaps the 4th as a sweetener? It's also VERY obvious that NO teams were willing to give up a first for Hall otherwise Buffalo would've taken it and not think twice. Come playoff time, Foligno is a hell of a lot tougher to play against than Hall.

Secondly, is giving up a first really the demise of this organization??? We have our core intact for the next number of years. This year's first may not make an impact until our Core is ready to leave town. Also, we didn't give up our top 4 prospects (Lily, Sandin, Robertson and Amirov). Plus, we have others in the pipeline that should be NHL ready in 2-3 years.

Just enjoy the moment for a change. Hell, we've waited forever to have a contending team that has the potential to make a serious run here.
