Rumor: TOR and John Tavares close to a deal: 3 years at 7 million

We always tend to get screwed by the cap mismanagement at hour 11, eh?

He wasn’t massively overpaid but we banked on the raising cap and got burned by it. We are literally about to repeat the same “cap percentage” nonsense with Marner’s camp, again, betting on the cap rising.

We have to eventually hold firm on our offers and not bend for every little accommodation other teams can offer. It should be a privilege signing a contract here in Toronto.

3 x 3 and I would hesitate on that offer.

Well the rumour was JT took less, I wouldn’t expect Mathews to give us one, as most Americans he’d probably prefer to play in the States. I think William felt he was underpaid on his previous deal so no way he was taking less. Mitch took Dubas to the cleaners got more than he deserved, he’s a fan, it’s his hometown, so yeah I’d expect we could pay less than anybody else. Mind you if another team offers 12 plus I expect he would leave because we won’t offer more than 11

Why do you keep pushing 11? It’s idiotic.
They’ll either let him walk or make him a competitive offer, they won’t insult him.

11 is not an insult for a guy that can score 30 goals in a good year. We’ve been through this goals greater than assists. Unless he can make a 50 goal scorer out of a 20 goal player he is not worth more than 11.

If ever there was someone suitable for a deferred contract it'd be Mitch. He's gna retire in Toronto might as well pay him say 14m or w.e but defer so cap cost is 12-12.5.

SURELY both parties aren't stupid enough not to figure that out. SURELY.

11 is a joke nobody is even talking about? So let’s stick to the real world, not bull board opinions. Also, it’s isn’t just goals that determine a valuation, ask Jon Cooper.

I really think it will come down to how he/they do in the playoffs. If they go deep and he plays well they’ll pay him at least what Nylander gets as a cap % but I think another team will pay him $13M+ and I don’t know if the Leafs will go that high.

I think Dubas might pay that, that’s why I think it more than likely Mitch will be a Penguin next year.

Mitch is no better 6 years later than his 26 goal 94 point season he had as a 22 year old. He had a lot of potential at that age. He has proven to top out as that type of player. I expect him to maintain the same level for another 5 or 6 years. He was overpaid before and is worth his contract today. I don’t care the cap is going up. It was 82 million the first year of his deal and he was overpaid. It’s 88 million this year, I wouldn’t overpay again. So we extend at the same or he moves on. I always said his would stay all year this year and move on in the summer. I see nothing that changed my opinion.

Just because you’ve ’been through’ something doesn’t mean it’s correct or meaningful or proves anything :laugh:

Even the most deluded of the Marner detractors knows he’ll get more than 11.
 
The title says it's close but how close can it be if it was close it would have been done by now. JT holding out for more pennies?

JT should tripping over himself to sign back with the Maple Leafs.

At the end of the day 11 is not outrageously different from some of the higher speculated deals 11 , -13 range. We’ve seen plenty of guys sign for amounts much higher or lower than what gets speculated here.

Look no further than here some say JT at 7 is a good deal some would only give 5. Much bigger difference between 5 and 7 than 11 and 13

How much better are Marner’s stats than JT’s ? Yet it’s rumoured 11 is laughable. Yeah ok…

I’m thinking the holdup with JT’s contract is he is going to wait to see what happens with Mitch. If it looks like Mitch is moving on, JT may make even more.

How you keep doubling down on all your posts are baffling - if you want to put money on it, I will bet you whatever dollar amount you want that he will not sign for less than Nylander.

He will get 12M+ from the Leafs and will have offers for several other teams for the same.

We won’t pay more I’ll make a bet there. As for money I don’t gamble but I will bet time posting on this board, say 3 months. Leafs will not offer 12
