That said, he'll be worth 7 million for the next three years, in my opinion. Here's some centers currently getting 7 million: Kevin Fiala, Josh Norris, Elias Lindholm, Sean Couturier, Kevin Hayes, Dylan Cozens, Troy Terry. I don't think it will be difficult for Tavares to contribute more than most of those players for the next three years.

Happy for him, as long as it´s not with the Leafs he´s raking in that AAV.
Regardless of merit, we cannot afford to pay JT that much. We simply can´t.
Unless we want to go trough the same song and dance. Again.

Given the cap is rising and he is still a very productive 2C, seems fair. Ideally you want him to take less but 7M for a near PPG 2C is reasonable. Still great on faceoffs as well.

Get to keep our 2C and free up 4M in cap.

Should be on a year to year basis
JT 1 YEAR 7M.

Whatever JT signs for I want to instantly say. Wow. Home town discount. 7 x 3 ain’t that.

Don’t get why more guys don’t just take a low salary after they have pocketed 10s of millions.

There is NO way Tavares wants to move his family at this point.
Low ball him and say goodbye if he isn’t a bargain.
That’s the Mitch plan

About a month ago the broadcast stated JT was number 1 in the entire league in percentage of board battles won.

Tavares has robbed the Leafs for the past 7 years, ud think he would sign for 2 million per at most. To help build a winner. He left the Islanders for money, he wants max money now too. Id rather have a younger hungry player who wont accept being face washed and bullied in the playoffs. Tavares is all about money, 7 million is a bleeping robbery.

None of this is true. It’s well known that we weren’t the highest bidder when he signed here.

Shouldn't he take a huge discount to make up for being highly overpaid the last 7 years while accomplishing nothing?

Toronto Raptors:
Moves off of fan favorite franchise leader who wanted to be there for a 1 year rental

Moves off one of the best playoff performers in the game because they want to save 1-2 mill

Vegas Golden Knights:
Moves off of their most beloved player in franchise history after he won a vezina

Toronto Maple Leafs:
BLANK CHECKS FOR LOCAL LOSERS WHO GET DUSTED IN THE FIRST ROUND EVERY YEAR. #TRUSTTHESHANAPLAN

MLSE is a business. They won't let Tavares and Marner walk without a backup plan. Need to keep the cash flowin

Why not wait till playoffs are over? Is he going to threaten to sign elsewhere or smth? He played like sh.t against broons, so why so desperate to sign him if he wants to stay? Worst FA signing in hindsight that led to bloated core contracts.

I don’t hate JT, I just hate what the signing did to the cap structure of this team.

They’re going to resign him and Marner and continue failing because they don’t have the guts to do what must be done. It’s like Groundhog Day

Most likely.
MLSE seems to be pretty comfortable with this hellish limbo. Not good enough to have a Cup run, not bad enough to get high draft picks. It´s the worst spot to be.

Whoa whoa whoa, don't let the truth get in the way of this Tavares blows circle jerk.

If you look at 3 x 7 objectively, which seems to be incredibly difficult to do here, it's pretty good for both sides. Is it a huge discount? No. Could Tavares get more than that on the open market? Likely, just look at the comparable players.

Of the four guys closest to him in PPG this year, the average salary of the three guys not on a rookie contract is 7.9 million dollars. If you look at the guys above his production... well, let's not because they are averaging more than that.

If you look at comparable guys and their contracts, Joe Pavelski is the closest (which is why his name keeps coming up). He got this exact deal under a lower salary cap (and actually produced less, but scored more goals, than JT is so far this year). Anze Kopitar is another, he got 2 x 7, but he was also 37 (and made 10 million a year through his 34-36 aged years).

I know no one is excited to hear this news, but objectively speaking (which sweet lord is how I hope Treliving is looking at things), 3 x 7 for JT is actually pretty good. If there is another option out there that is as good (or better) for that kind of price tag, by all means, let's go exploring... but what does that list look like? Sam Bennett has never scored 30 goals or 50 points in the league. The only time Tavares has been under 50 points is a strike shortened season and over the last three years plus this, Tavares has 31 more goals than him. Yanni Gourde has gotten to more than 50 points once in his career, 2017-18 in Tampa, and has never scored more than 25 goals. Matt Duchene is probably the best bet? If you think you can get him for anywhere close to his current salary (3.5), aren't you signing two centres? Hell, don't we have to sign two centres?

This is all to say, I get why fans are emotional, but that doesn't mean that this contract rumour is wildly off base, it's actually pretty great value for the team that signs it.
