2. When they played needs to be adjusted for. There is a reason Blaine Stoughton, Denis Maruk, Jacques Richard and a slew of others had better golascoring seasons that Crosby, Kovalchuk, Iginla, etc. and it isnt golascoring ability. Bure scored a lot of his goals in a very hard to score era. Ovechkin less so, but still much harder than most of Wayne and Mario's goals and every single one of Mike's.
That's not actually true, at least when comparing same ages. For Bure, for his career, average goals per game per team was 2.98....for Ovechkin, up to that same age, the per game goals were 2.82.

There were some very low scoring years in Ovechkin's 20s, not down as low at it got for a few years in Bure's career, but Bure also played during a very high scoring period as well....couple years at a level we still haven't seen since.

Doesn't playing fewer games lend itself to maintaining a higher per game average?
or playing way past your prime lower it?

Bossy was the best pure goal scorer I ever watched .
But anyone of those 5 could be considered top dog.
Debating which one is interesting chatter, but it's splitting hairs.

Ovechkin is clearly the best.

ok, using paper, pencil, calculator and hockeyreference adjusted numbers

Only seasons that are listed as player being under thirty for that season

Mario 412 adj goals in 599 games - .688

Ovechkin 518 in 760 games - .682

Bure 388 in 595 - .652

Wayne 542 in 847 - .640

Bossy 429 in 689 - .622

Notes - Mario had his second best season at age 30. Ovechkin also had very good years well after 30. The other three did not.

- i took care to readjust Ovechkin's 2014 back to 48 games played, as that site adjusts those shortened seasons up to 82 games. Speaking of which, it is possible that the 3 80s guys had 2 extra phantom games played added to each of their 80s seasons. This would only help their averages as they get goals adjusted to 82 games played, but i divided by their actual games played. not sure about this overall.

Shit, i had to go back and also readjust Bure's 94 for the same reason as Ovechkin's 2014. Thankfully, Mario was injured that year and Wayne was over 30!!

Ok, a better mathematician/someone who understands the site's adjustments better, can do this better, but take this for what it is. Yes, Wayne and Mario were also playmaking centres. Bure had the worst centres of the three wingers here. Ovechkin and Mario had both the highest adjusted averages AND the best old man years. Wayne and Ovechkin were by far the most durable. Bossy actually quite durable until he just retired from back injuries........ ok

If you really wanted to persuade people, you should have gone with "Bure's prime was during a low-scoring era - imagine what would have happened if he'd played outside of that era".

No one's buying your "imagine how much his per-game averages would go if he played more games post-prime" argument.

I always enjoy coming across an @Buck Naked post. I wonder if he's thrown women and children aside to run to the door when someone yells "fire"? I know he's been strangled by an immuncompromised teenager while on a roadtrip.

Super impressive that Bure is on there despite him playing the fewest games of the bunch. Bure only played 702 games. If Bure stayed healthy, I think he's easily #1.

Prime Bure vs Prime Ovy today for goal scoring? Bure gives Ovy a run for his money.

Bure played his last game at age 32. So you think he would average more than 50 goals per season from age 33 on?

Bure was great and his injuries were bad and at a particularly bad time considering the better surgical options that have come about since he played. But more games played would most likely drag the goals per game average down.

there must be a minimum game cut off here that is not communicated by the graphic, as Matthews is 0.62

He’s got a long way to go in his career yet though, so we’ll see what happens over the next 8-10 years

Ovechkin playing nearly double the games of half of them really just shows how consistent this guys has been. Maintaining 3rd place while playing over 1300 games is something special. Unfortunately we don't know how Bossy, Bure, and Lemieux would have done with longer, healthier careers. Bossy decided to stop playing at a high level and make his knee any worse. Bure and Lemieux couldn't keep going.

I love the hypotheticals. If Peter Bondra were drafted when he was 18 instead of 22 and played until he was 40 and didn't miss multiple years to lockouts he would have 700 goals. He is actually tied with Selanne and Beliveau in adjusted goals per game though.

Bure play style was not sustainable just like McDavid’s, who will also slow down as he gets older
Some people don't slow down much or at all till they are like 40 lol some do drastically so it's hard to say . But mcdavids smart enough and obsessed enough to stay good if he loses his speed imo

Yeah, I agree. I'm not sure I see the need to argue in favor of "your guy" when all 5 of them were great and there are too many variables to factor in to try to quantify something as objectively decisive. For example, Bossy (my guy ) loses points for playing in a "wide open" era, but he played on a team (and for a coach) that did not play wide open and paid attention to defense, and he ultimately had to retire early due primarily to 10 seasons of unpenalized crosschecks in that "wide open" league. But then yeah, his GPG "benefited" from his career being shortened (likewise Lemieux and Bure). So I'll just go with all 5 being great.

two things need to happen to make this better

1. games played after a certain age need to be excluded. Bure didnt play any old man games that dropped his average. Neither did Bossy. Perhaps 32, or 34. in there somewhere.

Bossy actually gets the benefit of every angle in this current format - retired early, all games played in a wide open league, great centreman and team around him.
