Top 10 - Most mythical players of all time

Well, about six months ago, I came across an obscure YT channel that had like four over an hour long VHS-ripped vids that compiled Jagr's best goals, dekes, passes. All the way from his early Pens days to I don't know when as I never made it past the second vid before the stuff was removed.

Given the usual top ten highlight reel of Jagr's, it was a revelation full of strange stuff like the moment against San Jose where he stood still in the offensive zone and had four guys in a row coming from the side. He barely moved, intuitivelly deked one after another and then casually passed to abandoned Francis who missed.

I remembered him much worse and more one dimensional. So the man is a bit of a myth too.

From all accounts he had an amazing work ethic too. Yet he had a reputation for being non-chalant.

Pavel Datsyuk becomes more mythical with each passing year.

I love Datysuk and think he was phenomenal and one of the best choices of players if you could clone 5 of them and play any other players 5 clones.

That all said, he is talked about like he's Wayne Gretzky mixed with Patrice Bergeron. His flashy dekes and take away ability look good on a highlight reel but let's not forget he was at his peak probably in the range of 10-15th best player in the league and really only had a 4 notable seasons.

He was also largely outshone by Zetterberg in the playoffs and Z was typically given the top shut down matchups.
nvm zetterberg fans are insane

In chronological order, pop culture wise I 'd go:

Cyclone Taylor/Sprague Cleghorn
Eddie Shore
Maurice Richard
Gordie Howe/Jean Béliveau/Jacques Plante
Bobby Hull
Bobby Orr/Phil Esposito
Guy Lafleur
Wayne Gretzky
Mark Messier/Mario Lemieux/Patrick Roy
Eric Lindros
Sidney Crosby/Alex Ovechkin
Connor McDavid

Vague impression that Morenz could be in there, for someone with 3 cup leading the league in goals once, in points twice, 2 first team all star 100 years ago and did not score 15 playoff goals or had 25 playoff points, he his quite the legend.

There something about his skating and show, complete ice play....

A 1950 Canadian Press poll named Morenz the best ice hockey player of the first half of the 20th century

A funeral was held on March 11, at the Montreal Forum, the arena where the Canadiens played. Fans were allowed to file past the casket, laid at centre ice, and 50,000 people paid their respects. A rotating guard of honour of four Canadiens stood around the casket which was covered in flowers including a large wreath from Aurèle Joliat that was shaped like the number 7, Morenz's number, and a note from Morenz's three children. The entire service was broadcast on the radio, and after its conclusion he was buried in Mount Royal Cemetery in Montreal.

Could have been on of the biggest radio star in Quebec, the first player to have his jersey retired by a team I think, we have about no video of it, only stories:

Morenz was the closest call I left off the list, because I think Eddie Shore became more prominent in the modern era, maybe because of the movie Slap Shot?

But yeah, I agree Morenz was mythological too.

Yes Slap shot grew is legendary status and made him the official shorthand/avatar for all pre ww2 hockey I think and his stories are quite fun, why he was so good and the intimidation game is more fuzzy than the 2way strong skater 40 goals scorer as well. Having to pick one, Shore legend grew bigger, I think.
