Just rewatched the fight between Dillon and Reinhart. I am surprised that PoMo did not go ballistic on this - Did Gadjovich get the 10 min unsportsmanlike for saying something?

You have number 8 in league scoring in his second fight of his career against a much bigger and experienced fighter, and the refs just stand around watching Reino getting the crap kicked out of him. He got so lucky he did not get clocked, hats off to him for his courage hanging in there, but in the end he just got lucky. The league always says they need to protect the skilled guys. Well you did one hell of a job last game, not even calling the instigator on Dillon for dropping the gloves first against a smaller guy. So lucky that Reino did not take one straight in the face

Eh. Even last season though we ended up being 6th in G/GP and 10th in PP%.

Worse than the previous seasons but nothing I'd call abysmal.

Atm though we are ranked 22nd in G/GP and 25th in PP%. It's definitely concerning, but I don't think it stays that bad as the season goes on. We are also somehow 2nd in our division despite our mediocre team stats. #MauriceMagic:sarcasm:

I think last year was a transition from the old system to the new one that Maurice wants to run. Same like the first year under Q. It was a mess basically. But they still managed to score, in spite of Maurice I would say. Now it's a full on grind fest, one goal games galore. They haven't been able to blow out anybody, even the games against the Sharks have been nail biters. I guess I'm just wondering what will happen to their offensive game in the long run and with the young guys and their confidence.

That has always been the biggest knock on him throughout his whole career, and also obvious on on his first days in FLA. The guy kills all creativity which also translates to an abysmal PP

Yeah and I don't think he has changed with the league. Pretty old school coach.

No instigator when Reino was fully engaged prior to the gloves dropping, just don’t think he expected Dillon to drop the gloves and go full ass clown on him. Gadjovich was sent back for unsportsmanlike I believe, so I imagine he called him something for the whole thing and probably turning him down. Dillon isn’t a good fighter, that’s one of the few I’ve seen him “win.” The fact that he kept feeding Reino is what upset me most, it was super uncalled for on a guy he knows isn’t a fighter.

Laus once told me that he’d love to fight Gretz, I gave him a wide eyed “really?” He basically said the Panthers win that trade off with he and Gretzky in the box for 5 minutes. Jets won Fridays trade off, but Dillon was out of line. Wish we played them again just so he could get his ass handed to him.

It's a grind fest because they rely on dump&chase even though they should have enough skill to carry the puck into the o-zone. It's probably Mo's decision to roll with this tactic due to being effective in the playoffs against trap teams. Coupled with the fact that they are imo the best forechecking team in the league is encouraging enough for the coaching staff to stay the course. Nevertheless, it's a problem because then it predictable behavior and opposing teams will make adjustments accordingly.

Yeah. The system makes them look like an unskilled team full of plugs when they are playing against good teams. Especially good, heavy teams like Winnipeg and LA. Boston more or less. Easier to look skilled against bad teams.

I really wonder how Kane would fit  He pretty much would have to play with Barkov because Barky is the only one that doesn't have to dump it in all the time to gain the zone.

People do understand that the Jets and Kings are playing like the Devils of the 90s ?

Have you seen their games ? It's embarassing... Kings players water-skying behind their opponents with no calls... Jets are the same, always the little interferences...

Also, I thought PoMo was kidding... But the man was right... Of the 15 games played after Thanksgiving, THIRTEEN were won by the AWAY teams... So yeaaaah... I guess I know why we were so bad !

We're a good team, with great offensive players and playmakers, lacking kind of a true-sniper still (even if Swaggy could be considered one)... I'm concerned with our lack of production/creativity lately, but if Lundell/Luostarinen/Tkachuk had good starts to their seasons, we probably wouldn't be talking about this...

I know people don't love our dump-in, grinding-it-out style... But it's still much more interesting and entertaining than Jets or Kings hockey... They aren't GOOD, HEAVY teams... They are BAD, TRAPPING and CHEATING teams... Can't think of any two teams I'd rather not watch than those two... They are disgusting to the sport... They will get badly exposed in the playoffs... Mark my words.

That's because our skill and talent level is actually so high that not even PoMo can completely shut it off. With him it's all about dump, chase, grind it out.

Idk man, people have been complaining about our PP for years now (even in 2021-22 when we had the 5th best PP), and statistically, it holds true. In 2020 we were 15th in PP% and 10th in 2019. Roughly equivalent to last year.

My point? I think we're overestimating the "we should have a better PP with our skill and talent" narrative. With the exception of 2021, our team has never been the cream of the crop in terms of Powerplays and it honestly makes sense. All the top 5 PPs in the NHL have a top 5 playmaker and/or goalscorer. Tampa has Kucherov, Maple Leafs have Matthews and Marner. We simply don't have that level of goalscoring/playmaking threat.

Now, atm our PP is in the lower half of the league and in that respect we are definitely underachieving. I don't remember what our stats looked like at this point last year, but I don't remember it being that good either. Granted, not as bad as it is now.

Don't get me wrong, I am fine with that since this style gives you better odds in the POs. It just makes a much harder watching in the regular season. Missing our biggest PP weapon in Monty for the beginning of the season did not help. Him and Ek clearly need some more games to get back where they were.
Don't disagree here.

I am actually warming towards getting Kane. Could be a good scoring driver in the regular season.
I wouldn't mind at a low price. It's mostly the specific injury he has that gives me pause. But he's also past his prime and at this point in his career, not as productive as even Reinhart and Verhaeghe, so even if he goes back to form I'm not sure how much he will help.

Yeah, we were not very good for a long time - thinking back to Soupy/Garrison days... the thing is that we don't need to be top-5, but we should just be better, and it looks like it that we actually HAVE TO be better to win a SC. You are right, we miss a true sniper (like Stamkos, Ovi, or even Hoffmann) and a true PP playmaker (like Marner and Kuch).

Our setup remains questionable IMO. MT belongs in front or just right next to the net. Over the last games, you could see him often on the halfboards. These "patterns" tend to sneak into our game.
