Chevy said yesterday in an interview that they take the best player available for their needs when they pick and ( paraphrasing ) don't give a crap where the player is from. He was asked specifically about Manitobans and he said that's just how it turns out. They just aren't there when it's the Jets turn to draft, it's not that they are avoiding them.

This is a non-issue.

To add... if the Jets GM was Mikael Smith and he was drafting Russians to prove a point, then sure you could say there is biased drafting, but Chevy is not trying to prove any point... he's taking the best player available for his needs.

I had a xenophobic person on Twitter saying "good ridance" to Max Giese because the Jets don't draft enough CHL Canadians.

I for fun, but really shouldn't entertain the person, looked up and saw that really there was only one clear miss on a Giese American selection over a Canadian that worked out better, other than Mangiapane.

I suspect if you asked Chevy it's not that they don't like Canadians or trust their Canadian amateur scouts - it's that they think the rest of the league discounts American-born players, and that selecting Americans makes up a comparative advantage for us..

It's a really good development program. I also like the NCAA path which is something American players are more likely to take.

Also, the best Jets pick in 2.0 history was American so I have no issue with American picks.

I really like our picks from the USNTDP as well.
As do I, they have a really good development program.

He’s part Canadian anyways isn’t he?
Yep. To actually answer the question here, there was really not much in terms of Canadians ranked around where we picked. The only other two Canadians that were picked after Rutger both seem to have been picked mainly for their size.

Who cares?

The American system is developing really strong elite players through the Ann Arbor programs. The CHL develops a lot of depth although the US is getting better there too with the USHL taking off.

US NTDP has been noticeably pumping out lots of 1st rounders. This isn't just a Jets thing.

Since 2019 there've been 125 first rd picks

18 selections came from USNTDP teams. 23 overall from the USHL from what I am seeing (OHL for comparison has 19, WHL has 24, Q has 13). Another 4 from the big 10 as well.

I just assume the Jets do heavy scouting of the US and specifically the USNTDP

One slight issue could be that Americans are the most likely nationality to want to leave Winnipeg in UFA, but that's not usually a problem

That is definitely one risk of drafting Americans aka the Jacob Trouba scenario. But maybe that's just a good problem to have, since it means you got your 6-7 years of service out of the player and he's good enough that multiple teams want to sign him.

IMO the Jets are drafting too many Americans. Or, to put it another way, too few Canadians.

Do they not trust their Canadian scouts?
Frankly, I agree. After a string of good draft years (and last years was saved by Perfetti
falling on our laps), this draft year has been exceptionally underwhelming for Winnipeg.

what canadian should we have drafted in rutger's spot?
It wasn’t the strongest year for Canadians, but it has been a pretty weak draft in general. Perhaps the Covid interruptions can be blamed.

… and there were several Europeans who seemed like better picks than ol’ Rutger.

Time will tell. I think we have mostly stocked the Moose for years to come, unless Lambert reaches his potential.

It’s a better development program than the Canadian junior leagues IMO. It’s why we’re seeing so much American talent in the past couple decades.
