From the Pensburgh article about the trade….no attention to detail, check…no understanding of team structure and how to play within it, check…he’ll fit right in here lol

“Brunette, who has regularly praised Tomasino’s skill but criticized his ability to fit into the Preds’ system, said in February that the forward’s limited ice time was a matter of “trust.”

“The little things that plague him a little bit, the structures and details of our system, are glaring at times,” Brunette said on Feb. 1 (h/t Paul Skrbina of The Tennessean.) “So you don’t feel completely comfortable and confident in games that are tight. He’s gotten much better as the season has progressed, but for us to lean on him late in games, he needs to find another level.”

Tomasino was sent to the AHL season 11 days later. He was not called up again for the rest of the 2023-24 season.

When asked later in the spring about the forward’s development, Brunette expressed some uncertainty Tomasino would be NHL-ready for the 2024-25 season.

“I think he needs to [take] hold of our identity we’ve created here, and he has to have a little bit more of that in him,” Brunette said in May (h/t John Glennon of the Nashville Post.) “If he can, and if he puts the work in, and he’s relentless, then his skill will take over.

Brunette continued: “At different times this year where he wanted the skill first without the work, I’m not sure he has a chance to play for us next year... I hope he rises to the moment, and I believe he will.”

Tomasino received a regular role on the Preds’ third line during training camp this September, and Brunette said in October that the winger had improved his skating and his strength on the puck over the summer.
That optimism lasted only until late October. Tomasino once again saw his ice time steadily decrease over the early stretch of the season as he became a regular healthy scratch.

His shift charts through 2024-25 so far tell the story of a player who still had yet to earn the trust of his coach. Tomasino was used sparingly in close games, and saw the most skating time late in blowouts.“

I'm sure it'll be fine. Dubas only scouts fits for the team.

Then again, he'll get plenty of time here if he's used in blowouts....

The last time the Pens traded for a winger named Phil who's former coach couldn't stand him it turned out okay.

If nothing else, this is the kind of move Dubas should be making at this point in time so I guess if all else fails, we can cling to that the way Leo clings to that door before we both inevitablly freeze to death.

Another positive of this move is that even if Tomasino doesn't work out in Pittsburgh, he should likely really help out WBS in the future similar to how Bemstrom is helping WBS now. Obviously the primary concern is with the NHL team, but Dubas seems to have a major focus in improving WBS as well and putting the young guys coming up into better situations than what Hextall left WBS in. Guys like Tomasino are top AHLers even if they don't pan out in the NHL, and you want to be surrounding your young prospects in the AHL with that kind of talent.

Worst case scenario is that it's Bemstrom 2.0 and they get a nice piece to help their AHL team. You can argue it's not worth trading a 4th for that, but the context of that 4th coming from Ruhwedel makes it really tough for me to even be mad about.

Dubas is moneyballing the heck of this club…it’s fine when you’re getting assets back to take young players who haven’t panned out, or are giving up very little…it’s another matter when you trade your best prospect for another team’s prospect …there are people talking like McG should be traded for the CLB defender….absolutely not…and I wasn’t happy with the McG-Yager swap….not what we should be doing…if it doesn’t work out, that can be crippling

Yager for McG was a smart move.

McG for Jiricek is probably a smart move too.

Yager is an all flash, great shot, soft forward.

McG is a physical gritty guy with top six potential.

Jiricek is a potential future top pairing RHD.

That path is all value increases if the player pans out in terms of trade value.

We’ll see who’s right in the end, but I don’t think we’re in a position where we should be swapping good prospects…we should be accumulating them

Yeah I like McGroarty obviously but I'd pretty easily make that swap too.

I think you can argue it's a bad look for the team to trade for McGroarty and then immediately flip him to Columbus, but that's business.
Right now its looking like it would be a Tangradi for Juolevi swap. But I do feel like high end D prospects are harder to acquire, so I would probably do it too. Jiricek, Brunicke, and Pickering being 20 and younger is a decent start to the next generation D-Core and allows them to probably get Martone/Misa/Frondell this year in the draft. Add one of those to Pono, Broz, Koiv, Tomasino, Poulin (maybe) along with our good G pipeline, and it gives a glimmer of hope moving forward.

We’ll see who’s right in the end, but I don’t think we’re in a position where we should be swapping good prospects…we should be accumulating them
I agree, but if it came down to CBJ only agreeing to McG for Jiricek I probably pull the trigger. Waiting for prospects to be disgruntled and hoping their teams are interested in stock options for the 2027 draft seems to be the current strategy.

People are like "Just keep going Dubas!" and I find that unbelievable.

Dubas has absolutely destroyed this roster in record time. It's actually insane

Acciari might bring a late pick at the deadline. Nieto just needs to be sent down. Ditto Gryzelcyk. Doubt it ever happens though.
Trading draft picks for young players needing a change of scenery is a good strategy to accelerate a rebuild.

Look at Pulju. If it wants for Sully that would be a 100% win!

I’m a little disappointed that we haven’t managed to sort out Graves nor Gryz. Usually we are great at recovering D.

Its a requirement for a top three picks. Even Dubas knows that theres zero chance of rebuilding long term without multiple top draft picks. A secondary effect is Sully will either force his way out or suffer the entire time, a win-win for dubas.

Value wise this trade is a no-brainer. Tomasino has shown he is a capable NHLer. Whether that means he will help the Pens in any way is certainly debatable, but I'd rather have a decent young player than a distant 4th round pick.
