As opposed to Sharangovich, who was totally useless and then benched in the playoffs after a middling season on an amazing team.
"benched in the playoffs" to shit on Sharangovich constantly is made more funny by using it as a direct reason to prop up Tatar. The exact reason people weren't excited when he came here and were told that that doesn't matter.

if you don’t understand that the 38th pick in the 2024 NHL draft is worth more — right now and this offseason when we’re looking to acquire a goalie — than a playoff team’s 2025 2nd round pick, you’re an idiot.
Fitzgerald was offered that pick and turned it down?

I mean, Josh Morrissey is better than the 38th pick - why aren't you disappointed we didn't trade for him?

Also, the outrage at Fitz is hilarious.

Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.
I saw a tweet that called him "the worst GM in hockey" all cuz of a trade return for a guy who was gonna either walk for nothing or stay for way too much.

And he still might be back next year (but probably won't be after the playoffs prove he's nearly washed)!

The same people calling him the worst GM were gargling his ballsweat last season, so f*** their opinions.

this is the real problem that thanks to social media. the hype train for toff last night was absolutely insane and why? for eyeballs on accounts and clicks and clout. then nothing comes from it and just business as usual.
Tbh I did kind of buy the Fitz calling in favors with media buddies posts laughing at all the hype the potential Toffoli return was getting.

As soon as the pick is used it isn’t necessarily at all. So unless the trade is gonna happen at the draft, which isn’t overly likely, the 2025 pick is arguably better to have.

Because the second the pick is used the value of it is much more subjective and the prospect taken is much less likely to be traded.

The 2025 2nd is more tradeable.

Like I wrote in the main board, the return is very disappointing, but it was still the right thing to do.

I don't know why people are mad at Fitz, it's not like there were Ullmark Saros Markström and bunch of 1st round picks being offered and he decided to take a 2nd round pick instead. No, this was the highest offer and the choice is to either take it or hold on to Toff and lose him for nothing. It sucks that the market sucks, but it is what it is. As long as we eventually get a great goalie for next season I couldn't care less about Toffoli Sharangovich or any picks.

Look at return Kuze got and he's got another year that could be problematic even at 50%. Fitz is a clown.

It might've been Fitz drumming up interest as well with Guentzel off the board.

You're not wrong but fanbases tend to attach to homegrown players more and Tatar has a history of going missing in the playoffs. He was huge for us in the regular season last year + the game 7 goal v the Rags
Plus a lot of people here loved Tatar lol...I don't know what board you're on if you think people weren't pining over his departure (I wasn't one). He's just had a poor season and gotten offed to a non-playoff team as opposed to Shara who's had a full breakout and been signed for another two years so obviously there isn't going to be as much talk about Tatar NOW as Shara, but I bet if you took a poll this offseason people would have said they'd rather have Tatar on a short-term deal.

Lmfao the backwards ass logic here is laughable. The Devils will be (or should be, but you never know with our clown show GM) using that pick in a package to acquire a goalie. That trade would obviously happen pre-draft.

but aside from his down year he’s scored at just about 25 goals/82 his whole career? and now he’s exceeding that so why not?

Because I don't believe in 'aside from his down year' and playing 82 games isn't the expectation - I also think any minor blip could have his ice time cut severely (even at the beginning of this season, he was only playing 13 minutes a game).

Also, we got more for Toffoli than Washington got for Kuznetsov.
That's supposed to be an accomplishment? Kuz has had a down year, was in rehab and has a ridiculous cap hit through this year AND next year with a NTC to boot. Kuz at 50% would be getting paid about as much as Toffoli at 100% lol

Market was soft for Toffoli after a career year last summer, why would it be stronger after a disappointing season force fed PP1 and L1 minutes?

FWIW, there's already Calgary fans who are making up trade proposals for Shara to get traded out of there because he's playing his way to UFA. Good chance that Yegor gets moved next deadline at the worst if he keeps it up. Imagine we trade the second back to them for him next year.

Like the 2nd in '25 but wish we managed to get a 2nd in '24 too, since we don't have one. We have 2 x 3rd this year, but no 2nd or 4th.

I agree that they should be and you can laugh all you want but the simple reality is the trade is more likely to happen after the draft once the off-season and free agency is in full swing.

I’m not sure why you think that would obviously happen predraft when that typically isn’t the case.

If it happens at the draft, the 2025 2nd is slightly less valuable than the 2024 Montreal 2nd (which we probably weren’t offered). Otherwise the 2025 2nd is much more tradeable throughout the off-season and next season if it isn’t used in the off-season.

Who says damned if he does? Almost everyone here was in total agreement that he should sell.

It’s more like “damned if he overpays in 2023 for a rental winger and then damned if he turns around and undersells in 2024 a rental winger.”

I’m not saying meier and toffoli should be similar packages, they very obviously shouldn’t be. But he got the same deal (maaaaaybe a little bit less value) out of Tyler Toffoli than Anthony f***in Mantha brought back lol. That’s awful.

Lol wow yeah, I wasn’t aware people would make that exact connection.

We let an actually proven good player walk for zero after he couldn’t cut it in the playoffs. That was met applause. We flip a guy (for a superior player) that had no role here that couldn’t even get in the lineup in the playoffs and Fitz bungled apparently?
