Todd Richards Appreciation Thread

This thread is a far cry from the "Fire Richards" rhetoric after the first handful of games this year. You people know who you were.

Those of us who stuck by Richards are the ones who should really be commenting in this thread. He's worked wonders with the youth, has kept the team competitive on an almost nightly basis, and without a doubt is a big part of the reason we've turned in the right direction.

Hats off to Todd and his staff. Excellent job done this year, definitely deserves our appreciation.

Much of the intensity and fire that you see from the players on the ice ties directly back into Todd Richards. He doesn't tolerate lack of effort or hustle, and his own popularity with the players gives him the leeway to be able to make particular roster decisions without losing the locker room. Normally someone who's branded as a players' coach will have a locker room that gets lazy, but that's never happened with Richards in charge.

That is an uncommon thing. Treasure it.

I like Todd's demeanor in his post games. He is a likeable guy, doesn't get sarcastic and frustrated, gives what seem to be thoughtful responses, looks like he enjoys the moments. He appears unjaded. I had the chance to have "coffee with the coaches" thru a Tim Hortons contest this year and was struck by how genuine and sincere a guy he was. I've posted in the past that Richards is my kinda coach, perfect for the CBJ in that he never makes the story about HIM. Other teams can keep their "big name" celebrity-style head coaches. Richards' style fits this town, fits this team.

At the end of the day, honesty and tough love never go out of style, provided the players hold themselves accountable for their own play. If the coach tells you that you sucked last night, and well you did, most players don't have a problem with that. At least the players we want to be Blue Jackets.

So I'm not sure that Richards will be outgrown, or that he's such a bad game day coach. I've watched a lot of games in the past few years, and making correct, rapid adjustments is difficult and often depends on your players buy-in. The players are buying in, so Richards can coach.

So long as the team continues to improve, no reason to switch or even think about it.

My dream is he a pulls a Belichik, getting fired from the Wild (Browns) only to move on to a perennial loser (Patriots) and become a HOF coach who stays with the Jackets for years.

Minus the cheating

True, but I'd rather have 100 Patrick Roy pressers than 1 Todd Richards one (and I'm a Richards fan).

Not to nitpick (okay its nitpicking:laugh:) but don't you have that backwards-rather 1 Roy for 100 TR's? Otherwise I think it means you'd rather have Roy as the coach.

Slow morning here this is the best I've got. :p:

Jackets Want Long-Term Deals For Richards, Staff

Blue Jackets president of hockey operations John Davidson and general manager Jarmo Kekalainen met with coach Todd Richards and his assistant coaches this morning in Nationwide Arena, barely 12 hours after the Jackets were bounced from the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Often, these "morning-after" meetings can be bad news for coaches, a handshake that includes a pink slip. But this was just the opposite.

"I told the coaches today that we, as an organization, would like to make a long-term committment to the whole group of them, because they've earned it," Kekalainen said. "It will bring stability to the organization.

"We'll start with Todd, because it's his staff. But we'll get him under a long-term deal and then get his assistants (associate coach Craig Hartsburg, assistant coach Dan Hinote and goaltending coach Ian Clark) on board with contracts that are of the same length."

So the building continues. I think this is a pretty good move with a young team. They seem to respond well to Richards and play their ***** off for him. He has the right demeanor for this organization.

Two issues with Richards management in the playoffs:

1) Icing Jared Blol. At all. No possible way Frattin or Tropp would have been any worse. Blol played all of 7:25 in game 6 with a single registered hit. Blol was about the 16th option at forward. Don't understand the fascination with the guy.

2) Icing James Wisniewski when it became apparent Wiz was a detriment. He had to have known of the injury, but there he was...game after game, gifting at least a couple goals to the Pens every game. There is no possible way that Prout or Schultz would have fared any worse. Led the team in penalties (tied with Comeau). Of the Pens 15 non-PP goals (so, ES and SH), Wiz was on the ice for AT LEAST 9 of them...and if I could do further research it's probably more like 10 or 11. At some point (like, say game 4), you just have to realize the dude is way less than 100% and costing your team games. Period.

Other than that, it's a solid coaching staff and the move to try to lock them up for multiple years makes sense.

Peter Horachek was fired by Florida today. He was in Nashville's system when Richards was (Horachek in Nashville, Richards in Milwaukee), and was also an assistant or head coach during Richards' entire tenure with the Orlando Solar Bears of the IHL.

Not going anywhere with that, just saying.

I wonder if we'll bring back Acton if Edmonton fires the staff. His position never got filled.

Love the interest in keeping Richards and his crew for the long haul. Hartsburg probably could go, but I think as a group they deserve to stay. Dan Hinote certainly brings an important element to the table, feel like he really relates to the guys well and knows what it takes to win the Cup.

Again, this is a great move to kick off the offseason by JD and Jarmo.

Love the idea of bringing the whole gang back. This franchise hasn't had stability in, well, ever. Especially in the coach's seat. Good move by Jarmo in trying to lock them all up.

The fact that there's a Todd Richards Appreciation Thread on HFBoards speaks volumes. The fact there's not an accompanying Fire Todd Richards thread (that I know of) says even more.

A very good fit for this club at this moment in time.

I'm happy for Richards, as well as Hinote and Hartsburg. Good for them.

That said, I've never really understood the point of long-term contracts for coaches. It's not like you are protecting an asset from leaving for free agency like for a player. When is the last time a coach didn't renew their contract and left a team for another as a free agent?

Personally, I think the evergreen contract style is the way to go. Set it up to automatically give a coach a 1-year extension each summer so the coach has a 1 year cushion beyond each season he coaches. That way, when the coach is fired (and coaches are always eventually fired), it is guaranteed that they get the remainder of the season plus one whole season as a 'severance package'.

This isn't an indictment on Richards as all - I want him as a coach. As coaches tend to live in the present, unlike GMs who have to think of the future, I just don't understand how a long-term contract adds any stability.
