Just because Couture doesn't hit as often as Clowe does, doesn't mean he's soft. Putting a physical winger on his line won't deter others from taking runs at him. At the same time, putting "soft" wingers around him doesn't "invite" other teams from taking more runs at him.

Clowe hasn't played with Couture all that much this year. Does that mean he's gotten hit more frequently than last year?

God all of this talk for toughness and no one has a solution. It's simple. We trade present day Thornton for the slightly off hinged violent Thornton pre-Lindros, dump the butter soft baby Marleau for Ovechkin, trade softies like Havlat, Couture, Pavelski, etc for M Foligno, Zach Kassian, Philly Mike Richards and then ditch Vlasic and Boyle for Chara and Weber. Then we extend Clowe and Murray.

Kassian - Pre-Lindros Thornton - Ovechkin
Foligno - Philly Mike - Clowe

Chara-Weber
Burns-Murray

Toughest top 6 and top 4 everrrr. It's so simple jeez.

Todd has done what was an acceptable job for his time here in SJ but he needs to go. His inability to change his strategy or push this team over the edge is costing us games, his system just isn't working. A change of the coaching staff at the AHL level wouldn't be bad either, it seems like Sommer has lost the room there and productive veteran players go there and become black holes offensively which is never a good sign. I don't know enough about potential replacements to speculate but I'm sure our Associate coach would be able to take the reigns until they make a decision.

While I agree that it is probably time to replace T-Mac, I must say, I think Todd is getting more blame on these boards then he deserves. I understand it is the coaches job to implement a system that enables the players to play up to their ability, however, at the end of the day, the game is won or lost on the ice, not on the bench. The Sharks are a team of professionals. Doesn't matter if you have Scotty Bowman or Al Arbour behind the bench, if the players on the ice dont execute,(connect passes, backcheck, execute a line-change, bury the puck in the net), your team will not have success. Sure, it's annoying that T-Mac sits Demers and plays Murray, and constantly switches lines, but really, how much of a game-breaker is Demers? I don't think we'd be THAT much better off if we had Demers in the lineup. Also, if accountability is the issue,(not sure because i'm not in the locker room), that's on the players. You're making millions to play hockey, you better be sure to bring it every night. The onus is on the players.

Demers was a +14 Corsi last night. Murray was even. Murray started mostly in the offensive zone. Demers started mostly in the defensive zone. Demers himself isn't a game-breaker, but replacing Murray's skillset with Demers' is a game-breaking change.

My point is, realistically, how many more games do the Sharks win with Demers in the lineup instead of Murray. A negligible amount in my opinion.

Probably a couple of those game where they couldn't get more than 1. But I'm just guessing.

Even though I agree with what you posted, the reality is players are not all/always able to self motivate or self correct. They make mistakes they don't realize they are doing and need a kick in the ass from time to time. Hence why coaches exist at all, if players could understand their mistakes and always give 100% we would not need coaches. Players and owners "shouldn't" need to take 8 months to determine who gets what slice of the pie, yet it did take that long. Unfortunately Things that should be, often fall short.

I agree! However, as fans, we do not know what goes on in the locker room. Todd might be telling his players mistakes they need to correct, but maybe the players aren't executing. No way to know. If players aren't able to self motivate, that is the players'/GM's fault. DW needs to find players who are self motivated. This isn't squirt hockey.
All hypothetical.
