Tocchet Do We Really Need Him

Currently I don't think this season has been a Tocchet problem.

Facts are that outside of a sometimes injured Hughes the top players on the team have been horrendous for big stretches. There have been some bright spots but not nearly enough to make up for the play of guys like EP40.

While Tocchet does frustrate me a bit sometimes, I think the fact that we're even in a fight for a playoff spot at this position can largely be attributed to the coaching staff.

If you'd told us all before the season "hey, Thatcher Demko is going to remain crippled. Oh, and JT Miller is going to implode and be dealt away. And Pettersson is going to continue his struggles to regain his form. And Quinn Hughes is going to be hurt for long stretches of time. And our defense is going to be a dumpster fire for the first half of the season," I think most of us would have expected a bottom of the league style finish.

So I give him his credit where it's due. And I'm also not a fan of "change for the sake of change" unless it becomes abundantly evident that a coach has lost the room, which I don't think Tocchet has.

But I hope we see a bit of flexibility and adaptability in Tocchet's strategies into next season and onward.

tocchet's inflexibility to play anything other than dump and chase could be a problem in playoffs... .esp against a goalie that can handle the puck for example. But its a system that does even the playing field against powerhouses like colorado, vegas and dallas. I dont think VAN goes anywhere without an elite goalie to be honest. I dont believe Lankinen to be a #1 with a bullet like prime Demko is, Tocchet's system is one of the reasons hes been effective up to now. So until he gets a decent chance in the playoffs. I think he deserves to have a year where everything doesnt fall apart to evaluate his effectiveness, as boring as his offensively stifling style is.

we went into this season with a d core that required desharnais and juulsen to play not insignificant roles man & they were desperate for fkn derek forbort to return (who has been good - dont get me wrong) as well as fans losing their minds that erik BRANNSTROM isn’t playing more. Soucy goes from being a competent #4 to playing like a #7 and never recovers form.

That all went on while Petterghost, JT whiner, were stinking it up

And then once that d core fixed, we lost Miller to make up for it.

Chytil sucks and is now concussed. Hughes injuries, demko injuries. Joshua’s season being a write off until this point.

The only pre-season top nine forwards who’ve performed as expected have been Suter, Garland, and DeBrusk. Suter slightly exceeding.

Obviously, Sherwood pencilled into the fourth line has exceeded expectations.

Pettersson is FINALLY returning and he’s hurt now. And then Hoglander is finally playing at a high level and now he’s hurt too. Just stupid.

Idk how people can’t see the context.. last season wasn’t a top five roster but he got top five results out of it. That team was a Guentzel short and now they’re a Guentzel AND Miller short. And, for as much as I strongly believe we shouldn’t give Boeser 50 million, we will soon be a Guentzel, Miller, and Boeser short.

Management needs to own it. There’s been bad luck but also they needed to do better this season.

Bad structure bc Im typing this up on the bus but everything stands.

Just adding to this. I believe that Cooper winning his first Cup with Tampa in his 7th full season makes him the longest tenured coach to win his first Cup with his current team. I recall when AV was about to be fired that if the Canucks win the Cup, AV would have that record. Since then, Bednar won his first with Colorado in his 6th season. More often than not it happens more quickly so if the goal is to win the Cup then that's the average shelf life.

Of course this is only Tocchet's 2nd full season and we're back to not contending. Teams have also won Cups with midseason coaching changes.

plus new system hopefully one that provides a balance between good defending and lots of goal scoring, 6-5 games instead of 2-1
 
Look at this roster. How many AHLers are currently on it? How many games did Hughes, Demko, JT, EP40, Boeser miss? How many goals do Joshua and Hogs have?

The Canucks top 6 forwards are a joke compared to the other playoff teams in the West.

Give Tocchet an actual roster to work with next season. The fact the Canucks are so close to the playoffs I think shows Tocc is a good coach.

That was supposed to be this season and it has backfired. The type of coaching that wins games 2-1 and low event hockey doesn't win enough games anymore. "Goals for above expected" is 7th in the league according to money puck. If they could generate more scoring opportunities, they would be the same place they were last season. Tocchet needs to allow the players to play offence.

I'd bet he gets an extension. Jim Montgomery has the Blues playing some great hockey. That would have been my choice to replace Tocchet when he was fired from Boston.

Seravalli was extremely annoying on halbro this morning. He was asked if there would be any reason Tocchet wouldn’t find the Flyers coaching job appealing and he couldn’t think of any.

The Flyers have no goaltending, no blue chip prospects in the system, and their future over the next few seasons seems dismal. Surely would be one of the most unappealing coaching jobs in the NHL.

Tocchet is friends with Keith Jones though. Frank should stick to rumours and not trolling. His analysis of players and organizations are poor.

The Tocchet stuff is pure speculation........just like the Hughes stuff is - slightly different motivations. I don't see much difference at all as there are no hard facts on both of EITHER expressing any interest in leaving........
 
It took far too long for the coaching staff to get the team playing they way they are capable of. However, I do think a lot of it was the issue on the blueline. Once MP and EP2 made their presence felt (and EP2 was a massive stroke of luck this year) the team is far more solid. It would have been nice to have management fix things earlier but I also don't imagine they saw Soucy dropping off as much as he did. That hurt. When they addressed the issue they addressed it properly and that is perhaps more important.
 
There's no 'salary cap' when it comes to hiring NHL coaches. You can almost guarantee that Philly will open the vault to bring Tocchet back home to the Flyers.

The Canucks, on the other hand, aren't the 'go-to' destination for 'name' head coaches, because over the years they've been far too cheap. And I suspect there's no way Canucks ownership would match a Flyers mega-deal for Tocchet.

He's as good as gone imo.
