Post-Game Talk: Please Disburse, Nothing To See Here! Seattle 6, Oilers 1

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

How did Rodrigue look?

As much as you can gauge a rookie in his first period of play ... pretty good. Made some big stops on an Oiler team that was content to keep turning the puck over, the one goal against was a random fluke with the puck bouncing up into the sky and landing straight to a wide open player.

I hope that Rodrigue will be immune to the Schwartz effect since his dad is a goalie coach. He will basically let Schwartz help him practice but only listen to his dad.

One would hope so. There's no doubt Olivier probably talks to his dad after most games.

Add it to the pile:

"I've got six rings"
"Can't squeeze GMs"
"Second tier fans"

If the draft lottery system didn't exist this franchise would be completely lost and never play a playoff game again.

You can pile Bowman's "Our goalie's win lots of games, not worried about it, I don't get what the fans are talking about, dur hur!" to the pile.

This just isn’t our year. Many of our players have been banged up (Now add Ekholm to the injury pile) and our goaltending has been a mess. The defense honestly looked solid for a good chunk of the year but I think it all revolves around Ekholm and how good/bad he is feeling. It may also be related to confidence in goaltending. Many forwards have also underperformed (notably the forwards we re-signed and brought in on contracts). To add insult to injury, most of the players we let go are thriving in other organizations. Just a nightmare year from start to finish and I kind of hope it ends soon.

Even with the uneven to poor forward performance, I still think we get away with it if the defence wasn't doing whatever the hell it is they've been doing since about the 4 Nations and even before. This same exact group was lights out for a solid 40 games of the season, and are now playing pretty much as poorly as a defence group can possibly play.

Ekholm - injured/sick, but regardless of the reason he's been terrible. Bouchard gets the headlines, but IMO he's been right there with him. Even early in the year he was not good, we need to hope this isn't due to age.

Bouchard - needs to start playing like not a p***y. Floats around the neutral zone, floats around the D zone, and throws up rushes with dumb f*** plays at the offensive blue line. Every single game we get scored on because of his stupidity and he just looks around like an idiot with his palms in the air wondering what happened. We can't sign him to a massive AAV deal long term right now. Currently he isn't playable in a top pair role 5v5.

Nurse - was terrible a few games ago, but generally has been ok. At least in the context of the rest of this rancid group.

Walman - see Bouchard. Pretty much the exact same issues infect his game. Smart pickup - what else would this team need other than a soft, dumb d man that doesn't know what puck management means?

Kulak - better than the rest of the group, but his game also took a nose dive after the 4 Nations. Was a machine this year, then the wheels fell off and a lot of puck management warts have started to show.

Emberson - went from a solid, reliable, consistent player that was slowly building his game to not playable in the NHL whatsoever. Has started standing around in the D zone and throwing pucks all over to the middle of the ice with still feet. I don't know what happened to him during the 4 Nations, but he came back a black and white worse player and its only seemed to get worse.

Stecher - he's been fine - yay

Klingberg - I don't want to see him in an Oiler sweater again

So we have Nurse (kind of) and Troy Stecher playing an acceptable game on defence. The rest of the group are an embarrassment, honestly. It's pathetic how they're playing.

I actually had a thread about the all-time classic Oilers quotes back in 2023. My list included:

Dallas Eakins: "Craig's on it!
Dallas Eakins: "Chop water, carry wood."
Dallas Eakins: "The perfect game is zero hits."
Esa Tikkanen, autumn 1991 after Muckler, Messier, Kurri, Beukeboom, Smith, Fuhr, Anderson, and (soon) Graves were all gone: "What happened to my team?"
Daryl Katz, c. 2010: "I think drafting and development is how teams quickly go from the bottom to the top. We're going to be a shining example of that."
Bob Nicholson, 2019: "There's something in the water here in Edmonton that we don't have right."
Steve Tambellini, re: Belanger: "You wanted your center, you got your center."
Pocklington, 1988 press conference: "Wayne came to me and asked to be traded."
Craig MacTavish, after 9th year of no playoffs: "Next year I would forecast as another development year."
Kevin Lowe, press conference: "We have two types of fans: we have paying customers and we have people that watch the game."
Kevin Lowe, press conference: "There’s one other guy I believe in hockey today, that is still working in the game, that has won more Stanley Cups than me, so I think I know a little bit about winning if that’s ever a concern."
Craig MacTavish: "Visually, to me, we're a better hockey team."
Ken Holland: "I looked at the guide and record book."
Jay Woodcroft: "What we're focused on is the all-consuming pursuit of the next solution."

At least whoever writes their speeches is earning their pay and one of the few competent people in the org.

Good Lord the absolute arrogance on display in these quotes is suffocating.

Dallas played last night, as you know. Were probably a little tired after nearly blowing the game

Flames are nothingburger team that’s on a heater
I don't think they're much, the Pacific division is generally very weak. That said where we are in standings indicates this club, this season, it ain't much either. Still holding out hope theres some other gear but the Oilers haven't been playing that well for months.

Let's look at the bigger picture here. We have no business winning with Mcdavid and Leon both being out, but I've actually been impressed with our team (goalie aside) since the injuries.

We played great vs the Jets, Kraken and Stars before lasts night game. Some of the depth players are finally showing compete and some promise. The Oilers were on a b2b and got to bed at 4am. Let's give them that game off and see how they respond.

This might be just what are team needs to wake up
"Played great" is overselling it. We got a modest bump from players that hadn't been doing a lot all season and that enthusiasm seemed to last for a couple days. Even while the team had 3 days off to prepare between games I don't think we were that much against Dallas. I think the garbage time come back goals while Dallas stopped skating creates some other view. We were down 4-0 against Dallas and down 6-0 last night. Great isn't a word I'd use.

They aren't really on a heater and will miss the playoffs but I think they've done a great job with the lunch bucket guys they have.

Their work ethic has certainly been superior to the Oilers and their relatively young GM seems to know what he's doing. He isn't dodging any subpoenas either. I don't know why Katz keeps recycling these guys instead of leaving them in the blue bin.
For whatever the Flames are one can sense that they've got back to having at least a room. Its like the players like each other at least and play for each other. Even guys like Hubs are now part of the team, no longer in funk and it kind of goes through the lineup. Just a work bucket squad not totally unlike what the Oilers were in say 1996.

The problem I have with the Oilers squad is I just don't detect this being a solid and close team. Far too much turnover and I'm sure by now a lot of players and even core players know the org completely shit the bed. Unfortunately McD advocated for half these guys to be here including nothings like Connor Brown, Jeff Jackson, etc.

In anycase for the Oilers to squander McD and Drai this badly for a decade, its a bad look.

On a positive note, it should be noted it was 2nd of a back to back. The team didn't get to their hotel room until 4:30 a.m., after just finished playing an intense 60 minute game against a tough opponent. Hockey players are creatures of habit, and this likely didn't help. This really was their first stinker in a while, after stringing together a good run of games. It also can't be overstated how much Ekholm means to this team, and not having him left a big hole, moving everyone else out of their comfort zone. Got absolutely jobbed by the league with the disallowed goal, which set the tone that it wasn't going to be their night. After that, it just snowballed. It happens.

I expect we'll see a very solid effort on Saturday against the Flames, as they reset.

Yeah they also had 30 million out of the lineup, but goaltending a huge concern as it’s been all year

That game is massive for Calgary. If we can beat them we are 2-2 with the skeleton crew and we put a massive dent in their playoff chances. Going to be an interesting game.

I hate making excuses for this team, but I agree that this one is legitimate.

Having the local game start at 8:22pm is the first bullet, then not arriving in Seattle until the sun was rising is the other. I also expect that things will be looking better on Saturday.
