To make the next step, what do we need?

I do think Cole can replace Ehlers overall impact. Maybe not next year but I'd argue he will by the year after.

But yes I'd agree that we have Noone that is ready to replace Cole if Cole takes Ehelers role.

Cole can't replace Ehlers overall unless he can learn to skate like Ehlers. He can replace Ehlers' points but the overall impact is more than that.

We always get people saying things like this guy can replace that guy but when this guy is already making a contribution it is just rearranging the pieces. Somewhere a replacement needs to come from outside the current team, whether it is an acquisition or a promotion.

Assuming Ehlers is gone, we don't have anyone to replace him. It will hurt.

There are more ways to contribute overall then just being able to skate the puck through the nz.

Perfetti is already better defensively and showed more grit and physicality in the playoffs. If you get a gritty defensively superior player who scores the same as Ehelrs then yeah I'd take that as someone who contributes the same amount on aggregate.

Perfetti might be our 2C option if Lambert can't make it.

Ehlers is probably gone.

Salomonsson should push for ice time. I'd like to see Heinola after a healthy off-season, easy to forget he stood out in camp 2 years ago when he broke his ankle.

But signing Fluery might be smart.

One thing that I'm really finding funny right now is how many people mocked the players for their "we need to each be 10% better next season" comments after getting caved by the Avs last year

They learned a lot this year, and i think that could result in another "10%". I think that even if Ehlers walks and we return a very similar team, they have the potential to go deep next spring

Corey Perry, couldnt play anymore either. Top old and slow. There's plenty of 37 year olds who are game changers right now in the playoffs.

Toews has the luxury of having 2 years off. There is absolutely no doubt he will play in the N next season and play well. I just hope its for the Jets
Not me.
But I may be in the minority.
I want someone younger and hungrier.
Toews was great but it’s not been for a long time now

I'll reserve judgement on his ability to play until the time comes (if it does)

If he can keep up with the play, I'm fine with him playing limited minutes on the 4th line and PP

You think Toews will accept 4th line money

Nik will still be better than the majority of bottom 6 players in 7 years.
If he stays it’s north of 9 million for sure
If he goes to the Leafs because they Marner is gone , he’d get north of 10
How many bottom six players do you know that make north of 9 million?
A 63-point often injured winger isn't worth more than 9 million for 8 years unless it is for 5 years. I would give him 10 million for 5 years.

FACT: The Jets have never signed a top-6 forward UFA from another team to a long-term contract. Nor have they ever traded for a top-6 forward and signed them to a long-term extension in their 14 year history.

There is no reason to believe that will change this off-season. The best they can hope for is a trade for a top-6 forward with a year or two left on their contract.

I'm 50-50 on whether the Jets will actually sign Ehlers. As I said before it will likely take 9.5 - 10 million to accomplish this given the cap will rise by 27 million over the next 3 seasons and the lack of top-6 options this off-season in free agency.

Related to this, I have a sneaking suspicion True North will gradually distance itself from the cap as soon as next season and become a mid-cap team operating several million away from the ceiling...unless the dollar improves to well over .80US.

I don't think it is as simple as that. I'm not saying that Ehlers is irreplaceable. Of course he can be replaced. He could be exceeded. But he has effects beyond simply counting his points. Opponents have to react to him. They don't need to react to Perfetti.
